THIS year’s Pistay Dayat celebration promises to be another spectacular event focusing on environmental awareness.

With the theme, “Matuwan Pasimbalo: Gayaga na Luyag Tayo,” the sea festival will highlight the various programs and accomplishments of the province related to environmental protection and tourism.

The pre-event on April 17 will feature a Dance Revolution and a Battle of the Bands contests.

The festival will formally open on April 25 with the launching of the Pakar Awards, a search for the cleanest river and riverbanks under the program “Ilog Ko: Bilayen Ko, Aroen Ko”.

Other events include a fluvial parade along the Limahong Channel, On-the-Spot Essay and Painting competition, a tourism and trade expo that will showcase the province’s native products, Banda Parada to be participated in by multi-awarded Drum and Lyre and Drum and Bugle corps, Labi na Ligliwa Cultural Show, and the Grand Orchestra and Ballroom Dancing Showdown, a 12-hour non-stop music and dance entertainment that will feature the best orchestras of Pangasinan.

The ‘Doypuay Kalangweran’ (Youth Camp) is slated from April 28 to 30 and the annual Limgas na Pangasinan beauty pageant will have its coronation night on May 1.

The Pista’y Dayat on May 1 will be highlighted by a thanksgiving mass and the presentation of the Tambuyong Awards for the cleanest coastal municipality/city.

“Konsiyerto sa Gulpo”
slated for Pista’y Dayat

Meanwhile, homegrown amateur bands will compete in the Konsyerto sa Gulpo 2009 on April 29 as part of the province’s pre-Pista’y Dayat celebration on May 1.

The battle of the bands, a project of the provincial government, aims to use music to develop environmental awareness among the youth and help them harness their talents for developmental endeavors.

The chairman of the competition, Paterno M. Orduña, said “rock, reggae and alternative music are the ‘in’ thing today and its message has a powerful social impact among the youth.”

The champion band will serve as the provincial government’s Ambassador of Goodwill in promoting the various activities on environmental concerns.

Elimination rounds are ongoing with the amateur bands playing their original compositions advocating environmental protection in Tagalog, Pangasinan or Ilocano with the theme “Aliguas mo Pangasinan, Kaimbwasan min Kalangweran”.

Two bands will be chosen in each of the province’s six districts that will advance to the semi-final round to be held on April 25, 5:00 p.m. at the Lingayen Beachfront.

Out of the 12, five will compete in the final round that will determine the second runner-up, first runner-up and grand champion.

The contestants will be judged on the following criteria: originality (original composition to environmental/developmental concerns), 50 percent; musicality, 20 percent; stage performance, 20 percent and audience impact, 10 percent.
