DCNHS alumni frown on political dynasties

“God permits perplexity in order that we may know Him better.” –Zac Poonen, author of “Finding God’s Will”

WE were haunted by a past column article, “The changing scene” as a pall of sadness descended on the local community lately.

We wrote then that some of the familiar faces you were exchanging smiles and good news with daily have left the scene forever.

On Wednesday night, we were at the wake of former PRISAA treasurer Seato Gonimil amid restrained hellos from Councilor Chito Samson who just had another heart surgery, and Molly Reyes who was not at his usual jolly mood.

When we viewed our sleeping friend at the casket, we heard more heart-biting news about friends who too had just died. Our heart sank when we heard that restaurateur icon, Emma Bernal Castro has also passed on, only a week after her daughter-in-law, Vita Purisima, wife of Jet Castro, also succumbed to an illness.

Shortly before lunch on Thursday the friendly banters at Pedritos were subdued. Not even Al Fernandez’s humor could help ease the baggage of the heart.

In death as in life, we need only remember that we are all children of God, and our earthly life is fleeting.

We should be focused on the eternal life.

Let’s pray for the eternal repose of our friends’ souls.

Rep. Pol Batoil in the 2nd district has a simple but credible campaign strategy.

In the latest issue of Northern Watch, a one-page article on Bataoil by Yolly Sotelo began with a promise he made while campaigning to his constituents. “What projects would you want me to do for your town if I get congressman?”

Residents of four towns – Lingayen, Binmaley, Aguilar and Mangatarem —  told him they needed a “bridge,”

That’s exactly what he did. The article showed colored pictures of four hanging bridges in the four towns criss-crossed by rivers, as he had promised to do. He baptized them “Bridges of hope.”

The bridges have since made hundreds of lives in those towns easier and productive.

Who says politics is only for the politicians?

Pol showed politics is for people empowerment, for progress.

Filipinos in touch with Dagupan were impressed by alumni of the Dagupan City National High School, particularly Class 65, for staging a political dynasties forum yesterday.

Resource speaker was Romulo “Bobby” Tuazon, a Class 65 member and brother of our classmate Arturo and the late esteemed colleague Victor, one of the original Punchmen.

We received earlier an invitation to be the forum moderator, but it’s a Saturday, our regular schedule in Manila.

Their effort to hold that forum was not only educational but a civic duty as well by those in the know to tell the town that dynasties are anathema to democratic progress.

We doff our hat to Class 65 whose love for Dagupan and democracy has not waned.

NOTES: As extreme pressure closes in on a leader the most he could—or should—do is to align with the highest good. As the Bible advises, “Lean on, trust and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind…and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths,” (Proverbs 3:5,6).

CSC chair Pincoy Duque would be pleased to know that his staff in San Fernando, La Union is earning public accolade for its fast, methodical and trustworthy work……

We notice that young councilor bets—former barangay chairs Saysi Samson and Marvin Fabia—have shot up to the winning column. Good luck …

The University of the East’s commencement speaker last Thursday was our friend, UE alumnus Cesar T. Quiambao of Stradcom…..

Mayor Ayoy Resuello’s city of beauties showed once more that the winners of the recent Ms. San Carlos pageant can give Bb. Pilipinas beauties a run for their money. They are: The winners are Celine Bean Magalong Selga, Miss SCC; Dana Elofanio Sales, 1st runner-up; Cara Jae Rosario Orio, 2nd runner-up; Marielle Lizette Espinoza Marcellano, 3rd runner-up, and Mary Queen Soriano Layacan, 4th runner-up; Gemma Gonzales Soriano, Ms. Friendship….

We just received this text message: “There’s something in politics that we can’t live with normally.

Its “victory at all costs” creed is evil, however you look at it.
