Playing with Fire
The gubernatorial race has begun
By Gonzalo Duque
BRACE up for this hot news. There are seven “tough guys” who are either planning or being eyed to run for Pangasinan governor. Some of this “balbalita” have been confirmed, others are yet to be confirmed.
Aliwa yan palpalaran ya balita. This is a development that our friend Guv Spines should not ignore. There are noises in the closet. En garde, Governor?
Yes, the names of FVR and JDV are being mentioned. In a family meeting, we heard that Mayor Nani Braganza, known nemesis of Governor Spines, was seen asking FVR to allow him to run for governor, yes, against, Spines, but the FVR said good naturedly, of course, “ako muna.”
But Nani who has not closed the door on his gubernatorial plan told newsmen “please take note, pag nagbibiro si uncle, I’m not.”
JdV’s name is being mentioned frequently, but he doused cold water on it during an interview with newsmen during the inauguration of the Diversion Road last December 27.
And then last December 29 when Fr. Jerry Orbos came to Dagupan socializing with old friends, mostly powerful families, speculations surfaced quickly that he could be planning something. An aide of his confirmed it – the hearsay that he was eyeing or is being eyed for governor. Maybe, he wants to do an Ed Panlilio in Pangasinan. Oo nga naman, if Among Ed can do it in Pampanga with all the Arroyo and Macapagal forces working against him, why can’t Father Jerry, who is very popular and has a brother former governor Oscar.
Narinig nyo na ba si Father mag speech? Ay grabe, matindi, very moving, and he is loved by the people.
When asked about it, the self effacing priest gracefully avoided the issue.
And then, the speculations that Congressman Victor Agbayani is itching to go back to his former post has not stopped. Natalo ang asawa kay Spines kasi hindi naman native na Agbayani or Pangasinese, sabi ng mga nagjujustify sa pagkatalo niya.
And then from the east, we heard that graduating Congressman Conrad Estrella is also eyeing Spines’ post. The rumor was dampend by his lolo Lakay Condring’s denial.
So the equation is left yet to another easterner big gun, aha, ito na, ito na yong kinatatakutan, Congressman Mark Cojuangco, super mabait, gwapo, and bilyonaire.
O, anong say nyo? Since you know the nature of the game, itong si Mark ay dapat pag-ukolon ng pansin, and on the part of Spines, nerbiyos. Ay katawan, ni, ang dami pang nagawa as congressman, at napakatatag.
Pag lumaban, ompiano onatras laran amin, ano? Of course, not Spines, kasi incumbent, kahiyaan na. At saka ang dami ng accomlishment ang kabigan natin na governor. Kaya lang, we can’t close our eyes to the fact that matinding kalaban itong si Mark.
Can you disagree? Of course, you can’t. There lies the strength of this guy Mark.

President GMA’s taking over the tough job of anti drugs czarina shows the gravity of the problem. Her act reminds us of the time she took over the education department when things were going awry.
Her taking a direct hand on drugs reminds us also of our unattended if abandoned drug rehab center in Burgos, Pangasinan because our leaders don’t really have any concern about the problem.
And then no less than then Speaker Joe offered to do the project so long as the site be located in Dagupan. We had no recourse but to agree. But wala rin nangyari. Sana may mangyayari na ngayon with GMA at the helm.
