“Greatness is not self conscious,” Anon

ANY day now or on Martial Law Day, September 21, our local TV people, the likes of Ms. Michelle Soriano would ask us to recall our 30-day incarceration at about that time in 1972.

We want to diminish the recollection’s emotional tone, as the nation needs to move on. A fast review of the experience — the un-freedom  struggle — when media including our local media was at its shining-est seemed to have ended in a sigh, since  most of the goals of the struggle were never achieved.

There are those who say that life these days has even become worse, with poverty a common fare, breakdown of peace reaching the inner recesses of our homes, and graft and corruption becoming so rampant, many Pinoys even love to lick the asses of the corrupt.

We marvel at the few in the front lines who have achieved a degree of minimum comfort such as the overseas workers who have brought home billions worth of new wealth.

Some of our government officials who don’t want to miss devouring the fruit of our OFWs tough labor would even add insult to their hardship by arrogantly opening their balikbayan boxes. Good thing Senator Bongbong Marcos gave the Bureau of Customs a dose of their own medicine and made them say “we’re sorry for trying to steal your goodies.”

Whatever they say, Senator Grace Poe made a decision that looked like what her adoptive father did in an apparent shot at greatness.

It’s hoped though that real greatness should not be conscious. It’s like what our Jose Rizal would have none of the trappings of glory certain people would project him.

Thus we feel a sense of alarm with Grace Poe’s bid for the presidency, being much, much more than what she could be thinking of that’s labeled carelessly as “public service” many pass off as a ticket to fame, which in most instances, could lead to a complete reversal.

God forbid!

Is the 2016 presidential challenge limited to only 3– Mar Roxas, Jojo Binay and Grace Poe?

Attorney Gonzalo says Rody Duterte is not to be counted out despite the withdrawal yarn. Our friend, Bishop Nilo Tayag says Bongbong Marcos — he with the massive command votes in his hands — may make an announcement shortly, although our partner in the Joe de Venecia staff, Atty. Raul Lambino says otherwise.

We thought Raul should stay longer in his beloved Pozorrubio hometown to win as mayoral candidate.

Getting him on the totem pole of local politics will surely give the town a break or, as historian Mel Jovellanos would insist, a breakthrough.

Raul was one of the stout hearts behind the charter change debate that almost catapulted him to the senate. His close links with former President Gloria Arroyo who is being held by the government at the Veterans Hospital has made Raul a lawyer of national fame.

NOTES: The principal of the Mapandan National High School is in trouble for requiring her students to shell out P500 each for the purchase of a lot adjoining the school… Our plural politics should be viewed as a plus for giving the electorate a wider field of choice in electing our national leaders… Mita Duque’s president hotel breakfast club has become a favorite place of news-hungry leaders. Last Wednesday, Vice Mayor Roy Macanlalay won the local media’s support for his bid as comebacking mayor of Calasiao and for his son, Mayor Mark, for his vice gubernatorial bid.
