2013

By Johanne Margarette R. Macob

THIS marks the second time I am writing about the new year, not to mention for the same outfit. And just like the last time, it feels great.

The leap year is about to end to give way to the Year of the Snake. A lot of big happenings occurred in 2012 but I must say whatever those events are, we, as always move forward and further.

Being a native of Pangasinan, assessing this year for us would somehow be baffling. Well, the province did and still is doing very well in a lot of aspects, such as cultural and economic, as attested by the awards we have received. And just like in 2011, this 2012 we were again able to extend help to the people in Mindanao who were seriously devastated by a typhoon. Also, Pangasinan is deemed the fourth best province in the entire archipelago. Those are just some of the reasons to be even prouder as a Pangasinense. However, later this year some unpleasant incidences struck our dear home. For instance, our governor is now facing a plunder case before the Ombudsman and one town mayor was killed for a still unclear reason.

And thus ending this year gives me mixed emotions. It feels good to know how the province thrived in different areas of governance. However, the latter events, particularly the one that involved death makes me really feel forlorn.

On one hand, as a Filipino I would have to say that the Philippines marked a number of milestones. This year, the Senate convicted and impeached a Chief Justice, Renato Corona, a first in the country’s political history. Then the government appointed the first woman to take the CJ seat.

Despite all the not-so-good things that took place, I believe we still have to be gladly looking forward to the coming year.  For what it’s worth, the predicted “end of the world” didn’t happen so 2012 has given us the chance to do better in 2013.

To share a few things I learned about the coming year, 2013 is the first year in 26 years after 1987 that bear different digits. With the Snake in the Chinese calendar, which symbolizes intelligence among other things, I want to believe that we will take that quality and be more keen and wise in the succeeding year. Further, the color of the year – as identified by the color corporation Pantone – is emerald green. I hope then that we will all “live green” and uphold environmental love and caring.

Indeed just like every day, every year that unfolds gives us hope and the chance to do more, be better, and pursue our very purpose. Happy New Year everyone! Let’s have a meaningful one.
