Bishop Cruz should back GMA’s drugs war

By Jun Velasco

IN spite of the harsh tag on the President as “Ate Glue,” she has made some bullseye actions and decisions on our crippling problems.

Her taking a direct hand on illicit drugs should be the first step in eradicating our unflattering label as the new Columbia, being the drug center of the world!

We hope the influential anti jueteng czar Bishop Oscar Cruz will back Gloria’s anti drugs campaign to the hilt. We, the public too, should do no less. Our lives are in peril in the hands of drug addicts roaming around with impunity.

Outrage over the “ouster” of Director Fidel Ginez from his DPWH post shows his strong rapport with the leaders in the region.

Even the apolitical Dr. Salvador Duque, co-chair of the Regional Development Council, could not believe his unceremonious relief.

We heard the President is peeved by Fidel’s closeness to her pet peeve. Speaker Joe de Venecia, although the fact of the matter is that everybody knows that he is friendly with everybody, especially the President. What actually triggered the ouster? The ever cool Mayor Al Fernandez who witnessed the whole thing — PGMA calling Sec. Jun Ebdane to assign Fidel’s replacement – says the Region l caper was merely a part of a nationwide DPWH officers’ movement.

But by gum, so many top guns in government including congressmen and well-heeled private leaders felt stung by the Presidential decision they consider a misstep.

We thought Fidel should switch to politics because of his excellent PR and sheer popularity.

Thru this space, our friend, Ben Diansay, a leading Mindanao publisher, wishes to thank Mayors Al Fernandez, Nani Braganza, Nestor Pulido and Board Member wife Alice for making his 5-day stay in Pangasinan an “affair to remember.”

At the fabled Hundred Islands, he met his fellow Davaeno, Ms. Ely Fenger, mother of 2006 Miss Teen Canada Lana Roi, and husband Canadian Ed Fenger in the company of Mayor Braganza and a group of journalist-friends who were guests of Pulido and Braganza.

Ben also was charmed by former Agrarian Minister Condring Estrella who at 9l was still in athletic shape and intellectually sharp. He also met Paranaque Congressman Ed Zialcita, a colleague during our Jaycee days, at Al Fernandez’s “dream fishpond.” Ed, we learned, is running for senator. He is cut for the job.

At press time, newly installed Director Mariano Alquiza as Ginez replacement came under fire from the party-list Abono leader Rosendo So, detailing certain irregularities he has allegedly left in the Cordilleras where he was earlier assigned.

The guy has not yet reported for work and yet, resistance has already been mounted against him. In fairness, he should be given a chance to answer the charges, which are serious.
