Phil. Dept. of Education, like many in a democratic society, has provisions to mandate or write new policies when there’s a need. A school policy against cell phone use is not new, but the implementation of this “search for cell phones” is what undermines the very existence of what public education is all about.

In a civilized society, the vision in public education is first and foremost to prepare the young ones into becoming responsible citizens. What part of responsibility is taken into account when these students are searched everyday to look for, of all things, a cell phone, by a security guard or a policeman?

Yes, cell phones are distracting. Cell phones have statistically become the #1 tool in cheating, and yes, they should be banned from school age children. Who buys these gadgets for these children? Who pays for its maintenance? And who should be banning these phones? Is it a lot easier to hand over the responsibility of parenting than being the bad guy? When parents provide for the use of these devices to their children, let it be known that with it comes responsibility.

Just as the teacher provides these same students her expectations the minute they walk into her class. It is ultimately the students’ responsibility to turn off all these gadgets while in class, and if they fail to do so, that consequences are in placed and are acted upon.
