Jovy Bengzon on Daang Matuwid

Jun-Velasco

THIS phenomena, this kaleidoscope of characters – the wrinkled, the sun-beaten, the wretched, labandera, etcetera, 50 of them (sana 35!) – unabashedly explaining their “wisdom” or reason or reasons for running for president which is allowed by the constitution under our “demon-cratic” government, takes the cake.

It’s fiesta, it’s circus time. You’re right! Our elections should be in the Guinness Book of Records.

But it’s unhealthful to worry. Better just come and have fun, and remain alive and kicking!

Manila-based technocrat Jovy Bengzon, a Lingayense head of tycoon Cesar Duque’s think-tank, was guest speaker of the Presidential Hotel Breakfast Club last Wednesday.

A confidant of Mar Roxas, he talked of Daang Matuwid like he was munching peanuts.

He said “Mar is indecisive? No, he just takes time to scrutinize every government deal or contract it might contain a can of worms!”

He talked with authority. He is a former public servant, one time usec of the dept of finance; he munched public accountability, honest governance, transparency with gusto. His audience loved his off the cuff talk on the economy which he says will skyrocket under a Par presidency.

To us, Jovy is more credible than most political barkers who don’t give a hoot to economic data. He has a way of putting flesh and blood to cold economic date, a powerful push for Daang Matuwid.

If Mar sends Jovy to more forums, Daang Matuwid ceases to be political but a lively topic to be ground with gusto.

Illegal fish pens are back in the headlines!

We never backed out from this view because of the clandestine moolah (insidious corruption) that changes hands between those who pretend to serve the public weal and the smart Alecks who show off their patriotism thru “paid hacks.”

When the illegals hit dead end, they unleash dirt that fly on the faces of their sponsors.

Thank Ed Maramba, president of the Philippine Assn of Fish Producers Assn., for reviving his activism against fish pens, en route to a cleaner and cleansed rivers that have given the city international fame.

Our item last week on a tripartite approach to beat crimes seemed to have glossed over – due to space limitation — what Sec. Bebot Villar, chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board, the provincial government—the father-and-son team of Gov. Amado Espino Jr., and Board Member Amado “Pogi” Espino III – and the city of Dagupan’s anti-crime team of Mayor Belen Fernandez and Police Chief Chris Abrahano are doing against this well-known Satan ally – drug menace.

It’s comforting that in spite of its tight hold on a number of government officials, the drug’s stranglehold is expected to l slacken and give rise to a workable drive for a drug-free Pangasinan community.

Our schools (attn., Supt. Eufrocina Bravo) should design a creative program that would involve the community to keep the young minds beyond the reach of the dark influence. It’s illumination that will do it.

Our meetings with church leaders and evangelists the likes of Pastors Jun Fermill (the junior of the late newsman Jose N. Fermill) of the Word-Born Bride Tabernacle, Willie Carino (a self-confessed former drug addict and first cousin of the “Bad Boy” of Philippine Movies Robin Padilla) of the Word Manifested Believers, Pio Velasco Jr. of Amazing Grace, Mario Tombok of the Bonuan Baptist Church, and Roger Olpindo of the Open Door Baptist Church have uncorked this shining truth: It’s only the God solution that permanently works!

It’s simple and plain as that, the God angle. Divine intervention will make it work.

We propose – that is, if it hasn’t been done yet! – a tripartite action by the government, school and the church.

Let’s see if the forces of darkness can still have a foothold on our God-blessed shores!
