SAN CARLOS CITY–The notorious tunnel robbery gang is back in Pangasinan with a vengeance.

The group that robs mostly pawn shops by digging tunnels, chose to victimize a pawnshop on Burgos-Padlan Street in San Carlos City on December 5.

The Santuras Pawnshop owned by one Arnold Santos Sr., 60, lost to the tunnel robbery group P50,000 cash and an estimated P400,000 combined value of jewelry, cellphones, tablets and electronic gadgets. Police investigators said the tunnel, wide enough for a person to pass through, was dug that started from a drainage canal.

The heist was discovered at around 8:30 a.m. on December 5 by Marivic Magat,42, an appraiser, when she opened the steel roll-up door of the pawnshop and saw the open hole of more or less 16 inches in diameter near the counter through where the robbers gained entry into the establishment.

The robbers exited through the same tunnel without being detected by passing people or residents of adjacent houses.

The robbers left their tools that included one crow bar measuring 2.2 feet, two improvised crow bars measuring 2.4 feet each, two screw drivers measuring more or less 1.7 feet each, one big red hydraulic jack and one 10” iron pipe.

The police noted that the pawnshop has no CCTV camera and a signal alarm despite the fact that the management posted a sticker warning that a CCTV camera was installed inside the establishment. (Leonardo Micua)
