THE provincial board is set to conduct a joint committee hearing on April 23 about the increasing number of motorcycle accidents in Pangasinan resulting in deaths of motorcycle riders, pedestrians and collisions.

Fourth District Board Member Jerry Agerico Rosario told in an iFM Dagupan interview on Friday that five persons died due to road mishaps in Manaoag alone in the last two months.

Napakabata ng mga nawawala dahil sa mga aksidenteng ito,” he said.

He said there is a need to strengthen the anti-drunk driving law, including the use of helmet and other protective gears, conduct more information and education campaign “and if possible, increase the penalties of violators.”

He also mentioned road conditions, including road lighting at night, that also contribute to the accidents.

He cited the “I don’t care attitude” of some irresponsible motorcycle a riders who overtake carelessly.

Actually, nababahala na po ang buong madla sa pagdami ng motorcycle accidents,” he added.

The Philippine National Police, Department of Interior and Local Government, Provincial Health Office and riders’ groups have been invited to the joint committee hearing.  (Eva Visperas)
