JIMMY FERNANDEZ BASKETBALL CHALLENGE

LEARNING from their mistakes in the first game that caused them a costly 66-76 defeat, the University of Pangasinan Flames came back with vengeance with 69-67 win in their game against their former tormentor and defending champions Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes on October 6 at Dagupan People’s Astrodome.
Trailing by as much 17 points, 40-23, middle of the second quarter, the never-say-die Flames played with frenzied defense in the third period to trim Dukes lead by two, 55-53.

The Flames playing with stronger intensity in the fourth got the upper-hand and led by five points 5:31 left. But the Dukes countered with trey by Roxar Melendez and Michael Ayad to tie the score at 67-67 all, 17:06 remaining in the game.

Flames seldom-used Clarence Arenas received a pass from the perimeter range and converted the Hail Mary winning goal to nip the unbeaten Dukes by two points to the delight of the Flames corner.
Despite the loss, Dukes topped the eliminations to face fourth placer AIE College in the semis and Flames tackle PCST Topnotch.

Flames forward Ardel Valdez scored a game high 17 points with Rolly Bravo contributing 12.
Dukes sly guard-forward Roxar Melendez converted a team high 16 points with Llyod Quisay contributing 10.
