SUAL—An Indonesia cargo vessel is being held at the port here until after the completion of the  autopsy of the body of one of its Filipino crewman by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Manila.

Inspector Diosdado Pobre, deputy chief of police of Sual town, said the dead Filipino crewman was identified as Rogelio Rivera, 35, working as an electrical engineer of Indonesian vessel MV Ocean Spirit and a native of Novaliches, Quezon City.

The ship captain, Ntaquitis Dimitrios, said Rivera was found at 1:20 p.m. of March 9 hanging by a rope and lifeless in the bridge deck, port side of the open deck.

The incident happened when the vessel was on voyage from Tanjug, Indonesia to Sual to deliver coal to the Sual Power Plant.

The incident was reported on Thursday as soon as the vessel reached the port of Sual.

The victim was found hanging by a fellow Filipino crewman, Sazon Marion, a ship fitter, who immediately reported it to the ship’s chief engineer and the captain.

Pobre said Dimitrios informed the police that Rivera was last seen alive by another Filipino, Sherwin Mendoza, ship wiper, at 8:30 a.m. of March 9 inside his cabin discussing a password for a certain computer.

A quarantine examination on the corpse as well as the provisions on the ship was immediately conducted  by Dr. Grace Grace Ramirez-Aloit, municipal health officer of Sual, and Dr. Gerald Gozon of the Bureau of Quarantine of the Bureau of Customs before the ship captain turned over the corpse to Danilo and Charlie Rivera, of Novaliches, Quezon City, both relatives of the victim.

The relatives of the victim sought an autopsy of the body to determine if foul play was committed.

The case is also under investigation by the Sual Police Station.
