PNHS principal is accountable

The killing spree at the Pangasinan National High School last week could have been prevented had the principal acted as a ‘concerned loco-parentis’ to his flock.
It is the principal that has administrative and supervisory duties, and is mandated to implement policies aimed promoting the welfare of the student body, faculty and the school community as a whole. The mayhem perpetrated by the policeman reflected the very low regard he had for the school administration.
In the first place, why did the school principal allow the policeman to operate his loan business in the school? Was there some “understanding” that allowed the suspect to frequent the school to collect loan payments from during class hours?
Getting a loan is not bad per se! This practice is resorted to by many when in need.
The much-needed hours for education was sacrificed in the process. Apart from the disturbance, the students were shortchanged.
In my years of stint as a classroom teacher at the PNHS under the tutelage of two lady-conservative principals, visitors who needed to talk to any of the teachers or school personnel had to wait at the principal’s office. Nobody could just barge into the classrooms to do their business.
Outsiders were politely advised to leave the school grounds. Except for two janitors, the school had no security guards. Dubbed as the elitist-public high school in the province, community’s respect for the school’s teachers was palpable.
If there was negligence on the part of the principal, the Department of Education should throw the books at him. He should not only be admonished. What happened during his watch calls for a serious sanction. Allowing him to stay put in the school will add more tension.
