Agreeing with Her Highness

‘Tis a rare moment that I agree with the Mayor of Dagupan City. Dagupan, with its rivers and beaches, has the making of being one of the top and BEAUTIFUL cities in Asia and to have the city government housed in the old building is a disgrace. Both places mentioned by the mayor in her State of the City Address (SOCA) has ideal potentials for a new city hall and growth center. Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. has pushed for the construction of the now Jose R. de Venecia Expressway makes an ideal location being across vast fishpond lands. There would be ample land to create a new business corridor or growth center. On the other hand, also mentioned by the mayor is Bonuan. This I prefer as the best area for the new city hall. Much of Bonuan needs revitalization. And what an ideal location for tourists. Instead of a three story building the mayor talks about, why not five or six stories with the top floor housing a first class air conditioned restaurant with a panoramic view of the beach. Dining and dancing in a beautiful Filipino themed restaurant. More than that think of the jobs and tourist DOLLARS this could generate. I have complained about Dagupan City as being just another stop over on the way to Baguio or La Union. With fortitude AND political cooperation this can all change. Most important if land is to be bought it must be at a fair market price and no pork barrel for the land or the construction.
Do the right thing, Mayor Fernandez and I shall refrain from calling you “Her Highness.” The city has already reserved P10 million and The Land Bank has said it could lend the another P500 million to P700 million. As you may have noticed this planned future project has peaked my enthusiasm.
There are so many thing going on in Pangasinan and Dagupan in particular, yet no one seem to want to take time to write to the Punch. Apathy does no good. If you like what’s going on say so and why. If you don’t like something, let ‘em have it with both barrels(figuratively.) I appreciate The Punch for allowing me the latitude to express my views though they may be counter to the Punch’s. The Punch is one of the true forms of journalism in this crazy world of ours. Again thank you. Punch.
