“Get rid of the pork!” What a laugh. The pork barrel is how politicians get elected and reelected. Let’s look at the real reason why this “pork barrel” B.S. got started by the president and his followers (Fernandez?) in the first place. What better way to get rid of the opposition party than by accusing them of wasting the people’s money. Get rid of the opposition party and YOU hold the key to ALL the money. The easiest way to do this is by giving the people what they want usually by using government money. Much of the “pork barrel” money that is used is in work projects that go over budget. Example. Money has been allocated to clear or restore drainage ditches in Dagupan. This is being done by the mayor with money previously allocated for this project, not money out of Her Highness’ purse. Again, money was allocated for the project BUT any other cost overrun of the project’s budget must come from the general fund. This is where your “pork barrel” money comes from. When the mayor’s drainage cleanup is completed let’s look at the overall cost of the project. If there is one piso over run in the cost and money must be used from the city’s general fund, then it could be said that Her Highness is using pork barrel money to get reelected.

Another example. If Fernandez’s plan for her Eco-Park bears fruit, how much pork barrel money will she throw to other developers to entice them to join her on the project.

So much for the so called evils of the “Pork Barrel”
