Re; The art Of Russian bluff
Edwin T . . . let us make some educated clarifications on what you’re talking about the crisis.
1) October 15, 1962 . . . reconnaissance photographs showed Soviet missile installations were being built in Cuba.
2) October 22, 1962 . . . Pres. Kennedy announced the presence of the missiles and decided to quarantine the island, and also proclaimed an attack from Cuba, is an attack by the Soviets on the USA.
3) October 25, 1962 . . . Kennedy pulled the quarantine line back and raised military mode to DEFCON 2, meaning the USA is ready for any eventuality – the fingers on the trigger.
4) October 26, 1962 . . . Khruschev sent an impassioned letter proposing Soviet missiles will be removed, if the USA would guarantee not to invade Cuba.
5) October 26, 1962 . . . A US U-2 plane was shot downed over Cuba adding more gasoline on the fire.
6) October 27, 1962 . . . Krushchev sent another letter demanding the removal of US offensive missiles from . . . TURKEY not the BALTIC States . . . in exchange for the missiles in Cuba. The USA ignored the second letter, but acknowledged the first.
7) October 28, 1962 . . . Krushchev announced the dismantling of all Soviet offensive missiles from Cuba. The crisis was over!
The trickery . . .
Now, Edwin T . . . see the bluff here? Krushchev kept on pushing the knife (Soviet brinkmanship) until he hit cold steel (Kennedy standing his ground), and pulled the knife out.
And also for your info, the Baltic States – ESTONIA, LATVIA, LITHUANIA – were then under the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence.
Well, even a wino will tell you who won the chess game.
