Re: Playing with Fire
The predicament of the present leadership of the Pangasinan Press and Radio Club (now Pangasinan Press Club) is rooted on the negative attitude of some members to accept change. If resistance is used as a weapon to block reforms, it could be seen as a futile exercise to preserve their “own” status quo. No more, no less.
I recall an instance during the presidency of the late Vic M Tuazon whom we helped revive the club that was dormant for several years. (We were then elected vice-president for press). In one of the gatherings where media personalities were very visible, Vic asked me, “Nards, who are these new faces around? What paper/radio stations do they represent?” His query was clear and direct but sounded a little bit alarming. He was very uncomfortable rubbing elbows with “aliens” who had no credentials being around. He was conveying a message that the club does not look with favor embracing members who have questionable agenda.
I may be wrong but the threat against PRC Prexy Gonz T Duque is somewhat or directly related to or an offshoot of the reforms he has introduced in the club. If resistance is anchored on the flimsy belief that they (reforms) will inflict more harm to the club and its entire membership, they should be abandoned However, if it’s for the common good — not for self-aggrandizement — members should give their nod wholeheartedly. If I read his mind correctly, he’s bent on fixing the “eroding” image of the club. The threat against him, notwithstanding, legitimate and bonafide members of the fourth estate should rally behind Gonz. Remember, “Nothing is permanent except change”.
