Book them

Re: Fishkill damage reaches P300M

We commiserate with those people who lost thousands of pesos as an offshoot of that fishkill catastrophe. But when they brought their catch to the City of Bonuan Bangus to sell to unsuspecting buyers, sympathy for them waned. In its rotten stage, the cage fish owners and their politician-advisers — if there are any — should have exercised a little bit of caution. Are they out there to “poison” Dagupenos and the transient traders? Nagtatanong lang?

It appears that no (criminal/civil) cases have been filed against them. To teach them a lesson, throw the books at them. This is not a laughing matter.

Short-changed by tricycle driver

Re: SP set to override veto on trike fare

There they go again. The Sangunniang Bayan and the City Mayor are at loggerheads. This time, the bone of contention is whether the 10-peso tricycle fare for every three-kilometer ride as proposed by the city executive is the right thing to do as against 10-peso fare for the first two kilometers as championed by the SP members. I understand that in both proposals an additional 2 pesos will be charged for every kilometer thereafter. Hope that the two parties will come to their senses and think of the common good.

The city government should think of a means to monitor the “activities” of some tricycle drivers who short-change their passengers. Once, I took a ride at the corner of Perez Blvd and Rizal Street bound for the Star Plaza Hotel. Because I’m familiar with the route, I told the tri-driver to take Herrero (Pandayan) and turn left at the bridge. Instead, he turned to Rizal Street (straight ahead) and “deposited” me at the corner of AB Fernandez/Rizal Street saying “akar yo la” (since it was a one-way street). The worst part was I became poorer with 10-peso fare instead of seven.

Small things can mean a lot.

Kind-hearted Lakay Condring

Re: Pangasinan’s “Grand Ol’ Man” passes away

As there are many “alleluias” heaped on the late Gov Conrado F. Estrella about his person, I’m also a recipient of his “kind-hearted touch”. It came at a time when I least expected it.

He was invited as Guest/Keynote
Speaker during the annual Provincial Secondary Schools Press Conference at the Calasiao Comprehensive National High. As a welcome gesture for gracing the occasion, the school’s cadets prepared a “Pass In Review” in his honor. When he was about to troop the line, he called me to join him. Shocked and speechless, I walked briskly beside him. During our pep-talk, he asked me, “How were you able to gather these “cream of the crop”? As a side comment, Pangasinan was then the perennial champion in the Ilocos Region writing fest.

The controversy surrounding the landing of the late Gen MacArthur in Lingayen Gulf — whether in Lingayen or Dagupan — has been put to rest. It’s in Lingayen Beach not Dagupan. Thanks to Lakay Condring.

For the uninitiated, this controversy has been the favorite “past time” of the late Mayors Opring Manaois and Mariano Versoza of Dagupan City and Lingayen, respectively.

Unfortunately, the two joined our creator ahead of the “Grand Old Man of Pangasinan”.
