A Million Thanks

Recovering from my stroke last May, I have had much time and privilege to reflect on my affliction. Praying and meditating on God’s word greatly helped and comforted me. Prayers, best wishes and loving care from loved ones, relatives and friends were of great help and comfort.

Reading and meditating on the experiences of Job and Paul gave me much comfort and assurance of God’s love. Consider what Job said, in spite of his afflictions: “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face. Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance, for no godless man would dare come before him!” (Job 13:15-16).

I meditate also on what the apostle Paul wrote about his affliction: “To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassing great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

The great writer, C. S. Lewis, also observed: “God allows us to experience the low points in life in order to teach us lessons we could learn in no other way.”

Finally, consider the Lord’s blessed assurance: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4). A million thanks and praises to the Lord! Amen.
