What’s Mendoza’s true story?

Re: Crucial Hesitation
Although there was no excuse for what hostage taker Rolando Mendoza did one has to wonder why he took such drastic action.
Rolando Mendoza was a decorated policeman. He had six month to go before his retirement. After honorably serving for many years and being recognized as one of the top policemen in nation, charges were brought against him and he was dismissed from the police force.
I have to wonder why it took his superiors several decades to find out that he was a dirty cop. It seems to me that someone above him didn’t like him and was out to get him. Ergo, brand him as a dirty cop, take away his pension and let him live the rest of his life in disgrace.
Again, I cannot condone the method Mr. Mendoza used. Maybe if there were not so many undertrained police at the scene and an overzealous press, Rolando Mendoza may have lived to give us his side of the story.
