Truth is distorted during election

RE: VIEWPOINTS

We love the truth. We seek the truth. Jesus proclaimed that he is “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). He also taught that “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). When he was talking about truth, Pilate asked: “What is truth?” (John 18:32).

The truth is often distorted not only during election campaigns. History is replete with many instances when the plain truth was ignored. Most of the religious leaders of Jesus’ time ignored the truth he preached. When Galileo proclaimed his scientific discovery that the Earth revolves around the Sun, he was arrested, imprisoned, tortured and executed by the Roman Inquisition. It took many centuries for the religious leaders to acknowledge their mistake and that Galileo spoke the truth.

Only God knows the whole truth. However, God is loving and understanding of our limited knowledge of truth. Through his creation, his revealed word, our conscience and his Son Jesus, we come to some grasp of his divine truth.

With our limited knowledge and understanding, we must be reminded always of the admonition of the apostle Paul: “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15).
