Fish pens are signs of negligence

Re: Political will first
Sometime it makes me wonder if the fish pens not only in Pangasinan but all over the Philippines can really be dismantled. Can it really happen in our lifetime?
I was in Dagupan two weeks ago and saw the filthy sight around the De Venecia Bridge. Fish pens, surrounds the area and the riverbank in Pantal is occupied by squatters. Where else do the residents dump their wastes?
So many years ago, I walked that route for six years from Nable Street to Pantal Elementary School. I remember the wide road with some trees by the streets. It was a wonderful memory. I passed by the same road (route) two weeks ago and to my dismay saw the devastation of the river and its surroundings. There is neglect on the part of the city officials who allow such terrible damage.
We have to teach our children to save the earth, to keep the environment green, re-cycle, etc. Unless there is concerted effort and awareness among all people, the program to clean our environment will just be a wish or a dream.
Education starts from home. The fish pens in the rivers go as far as the eyes can see. It is so sad that people show concern, tries to implement laws, programs, etc. regarding environmental protection but the way we see it, they are just on papers.
We always seem to wonder who own those fish pens? Are they untouchables that the provincial or city officials yield? Is it money talks especially during election time where candidates have to please almost everyone just to get elected? Its a shame!
The end effect of people’s negligence to save the earth will result to disaster anytime or the coming years. Educate the people, implement the law, and punish the culprit. Unless we stand firm on our commitment to save the mother earth forget any program.
