Re: When the sun breaks through
Edwin,
I see why a lot of my co-workers did not want to go back to the US when Pinatubo closed down the bases, Clark and Subic. Quite a few of them stayed in Bonuan. Here is why.
When I and my family arrived in Oscoda Michigan after my tour in Clark we wished to go back because we got tired of saying hi to Bambi (deer) every day and fishing for the salmon in Lake Huron and passing the single traffic light in the small town. It was far from any barrio I had been in, isolated from life I know in Angeles City. In order to buy rice, we had to travel at least five hours to Detroit and what a glory when we could listen to more than two country western radio station and watch more than a TV channel. Lucky for me after a year we went to Guam. A paradise compared to the icy North USA.
I now live near the only mega base in the US, FT Dix, McGuire and Lakehurst and I hear a lot of white and black Americans talking about going to the Philippines when their tours is up to live. So I ask them what they will do and without hesitation said, live in my wife’s barrio and maybe raise some hogs or open a sari-sari store. They say better than your rat race here in the east.
For me I like it here in NJ and love to go home to Bonuan every year.
