Re: A case takes century to settle

Is the Philippine justice system broken? You be the judge.

A person I know was accused of rape. Everyone knew that the rape charges brought against this person by the girl’s parents was a lie and brought against the accused because his parents lived in the states.

At first the girl’s father tried to extort a tricycle and money in exchange for dropping the charges. The boy’s parents refused to give into the extortion.

A lawyer was hired with a retainer of P500,000. Three years passed at a lawyer’s fee of P100,000 each year. After 4 years the judge announced that he would be retiring and was ready to make a ruling in the defendant’s favor- for P150,000. The case was resolved and the rape charges thrown out.

I only hope that this incident is an exception rather than the rule.
