San Roque’s profits

Did the last competent hydraulic engineer leave the country? It’s true that the rainfall was way above normal but doesn’t any body know the safe water release rates so it would not flood even a single barangay in Pangasinan or 80% of the province. During the press meeting on the eve of Pepeng onslaught of NDCC chief Teodoro and President Arroyo, the dam experts were stressing the safety of the dam with water release levels and the chief and president’s concern was notifying Juan dela Cruz near the rivers of water release. Did the dam operators tell the people what the effects of these to their communities and how high the water level will be?

Of course everyone including the people soon to be flooded are concerned about the dam but not fully informed of the catastrophe to follow that would befall them. It is the technical experts who failed our people and the people who silenced them.

As they had said in accounting, follow the money and you will find why? Water levels are sure profits for constant electrical generation for the power operators. In spite of PAGASA’s prediction of above average rainfall, why did they not want to release water before the typhoons came?

Maybe their confidence levels with PAGASA are low that they do not want to risk the stagnant profits. Why not? It’s the people in Pangasinan who are taking the risks for their actions. Let them look at the powerful images of the suffering borne by the people of Pagasinan so next time they would think twice before they put profits ahead of the safety of Pangasinenses.

The bottom line is: water level parameters for profits equals power generation for power companies versus water level parameters for flood control equals safety of our people.
