Re: It’s the Filipino character
To Fr. Roy Cimagala,
Comments from Paul Rhodes made me curious about what your article was about.
I agree more with Mr. Rhodes than you. I was born and raised in the province but have lived in the US for over 20 years and now have enough life experiences to see the failings of the Filipino culture. The Filipino is too passive, happy go lucky, and don’t care enough to take care of business for themselves, rather, they rely too much on their government or other people. The Filipinos who are successful rarely are not what you portray in your article.
You should not interpret that these people who are smiling despite of the calamities they are suffering from are actually happy. Heck, that’s how they cope. A man of like you with higher education should know that, Father Cimagala.
Why would someone “submit to Church authority”? That is bullcrap. Father Cimagala, may I remind you to read on the Inquisition when people were forced to submit to church authority? Now, can you say those were holy or divine acts?
The Church doctrine in family planning? Why does the Church only endorse the natural method? Father, look around you and see the multitudes of hungry faces!!! The “Go ye and multiply passage” does not apply anymore!!!
The ongoing sad predicament of the Filipino people is mostly perpetuated by the Church because it preaches submission and glorify suffering. Add to that the spineless politicians and government officials who defer to the Church and you have the formula to a lead weight tied to poor Juan Delacruz as he is trying to get out of a mud hole.
Religion is important as it guides someone to behave in a civilized manner, however, it should not be the sole source of one’s guidance in life. You can not possibly suggest to anyone to “submit to Church authority” when some of your fellow priests are known abusers of the their flock? How about cleaning your house first?
Not until the Filipino think and acts for himself and not rely solely on his religion and government will he improve his life and his country.
