How to deal with the calamities

The recent typhoons (Ondoy & Pepeng) and floods that struck our country remind us once again that such calamities will happen. Scientists predict that they will visit again and again in the future. Even our Lord Jesus Christ has prophesied: “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven” (Luke 21:11).

Even then we are left shocked and wondering. As we read the news, watch on TV the graphic images of devastation and agony of the survivors, and read emails from our “kababayan,” we are left teary-eyed and sad. How do we deal with calamities like them?

Pray for the victims. The first thing we can do is to pray for the victim’s families and survivors. We can intercede on their behalf that God will be there with them as they recover from shock and heal their broken spirits. Amid the shock, disbelief and wonder, there is no better way than to turn to our God for comfort and healing. It’s time to pray and cast the burdens to the Lord.

As we pray for the victims, let’s pray also for those directly involved in the rescue and relief operations. We pray that they will have the courage and strength to pursue their work. Let’s also pray for ourselves and see what we can do to help the victims and that the Lord will protect us from similar calamities.

The world community has responded immediately in various ways. Contingents from the U.S., the United Nations, Red Cross, churches and other agencies are helping in the rescue and relief efforts. During this time of need, Christians have the opportunity to show their love and concern for others.

Genuine Christian love is demonstrated by helping those in need. Many times we renege on the opportunity to help because we can give only a little. But, “Nobody makes a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little,” said Edmund Burke.

Prepare for eternity. Tragedies brought by calamities remind us that life on earth is finite and temporal. We are bound for eternity. For such destiny, we have to prepare ourselves. We should be ready to meet our God and be with Him in eternity.
