Re: Break traditional politics
And the beat goes on, and on and on.
After the second world war a group of influential families, under the guise of nationalism, asked for and received independence from the U.S. Although the Philippines had not even begun to recover from the devastations of the war, independence allowed the “ruling” families to strengthen their hold on a devastated nation.
Today, over 60 years later, basically, the same families rule their portion of the spoils of war. Who’s to blame? The voters who vote on name recognition instead of knowledge. They vote for movie stars, sons and daughters of former politicos or, as in the case of Dagupan, name recognition.
I started by saying the beat goes on. A former movie star president, a daughter of a former president and now probably a son of a former president. Where’s the change? None! Is the Philippines better after the peoples revolution? You be the judge. I guess money and name recognition are the only requirements to run for office.
