Mangaldan is child-friendly
Dear Mr. Garcia:
Please find attached (below) directive which this office has issued to its Chief of Police, P/Supt. Geraldo P. Roxas relative to the article in your column last Sunday, November 2, 2008.
Please be informed that we, in Mangaldan, are avid readers of the Sunday Punch, but we were not pleased with your article on MANGALDAN PROMOTING GAMBLING TO KIDS. That is an exact opposite of what we want our young people to value because we are religious people here and we are child-friendly individuals in this very humble town of Mangaldan.
If your allegations were true, I will not condone it. I will do everything to put an stoppage on this illegal and immoral activity. To do so, we need your invaluable assistance, this you can do if could identify to us at least eight (8) barangays which you have mentioned in your column as the locations of these amenengs.
We will be very grateful if you could provide us all other necessary information as soon as possible. Thank you and More Power!
HERMINIO A. ROMERO
Mayor, Mangaldan

To: P/SUPT. GERALDO P. ROXAS, Chief of Police
RE: On the alleged Proliferation of Video Karera (Ameneng) in Mangaldan
You are hereby directed to raid and stringently deal with the alleged proliferation of ameneng (video karera) in out community. This administration will not allow and will not ever condone the promulgation of illegal gambling such as the ameneng in Mangaldan. This is not in accordance to my program of local governance. The children and families of barangays where presence of ameneng flourishes (if and when the allegations are true) will be greatly affected, morally, socially and economically. And, I will not allow this to happen, because they are the reason why I am here as the Local Chief Executive – I am here to serve and to look into their welfare.
Hence, you are urgently directed to act on this matter, and submit to this office a formal report within 48 hours upon receipt of this directive.
Punchline’s reaction: Evidently, a good number of ameneng operators in your town have been thumbing their noses at you because the “successful raids” of your recently (with TV coverage) per your order are proofs that they have been there corrupting your town’s children. And, the ultimate measure of the success of your campaign, if you are indeed serious, is in the number of arrests and prosecution, number of machines (with operating systems, not just the monitors) confiscated and destroyed by your police. The raids really mean nothing since the confiscated machines can be slipped back to the operators who, if not arrested, remain free to corrupt the vulnerable school kids of Mangaldan. Your barangay kapitans and councilmen, parents and teachers associations, not I, can pinpoint where and who the “protected” operators are. I just know there are more out there than what the police are ready to admit. Happy hunting…and more power, Mayor!)
