The pitiful showing of the Filipino Olympians can be explained with two words: no money.

Every successful medal winning country gave their athlete year round training funded by government and/or private contributions.

The Philippine basketball team once the best in Asia is no more. The multitude of promising amateur boxers no longer exists. They either become pros or find other ways to feed themselves. Other promising athletes suffer the same fate.

This need not be. An aggressive effort by corporations and the government to fund a national facility along with year round training can bring home medals at the next Olympics. A way has to be found to get the government and corporation to get off of their rear ends and help these deserving athletes.

I’m sure her highness, the Madam President, would love to use the medal winners in a photo-op as she has with Manny Paquiao.
