A slave mentality?

RE: Independence granted not “proclaimed” by Gerry Garcia, Sunday Punch, 7/8/08.
A Caucasian friend showed me this article. He couldn’t believe it. Neither could I.
Essentially, Gerry Garcia said that a country or for that matter an individual can not gain freedom unless given by the colonizer or presumably by a controlling/stronger individual.
This is an example of not only a colonial mentality but also a slave mentality.
This kind of belief or attitude is never respected in the United States or in any other country.
The freedom of an individual is an inherent right. Any individual who asserts and fights for this right is a self-respecting person.
Others will respect you if you respect yourself.
I was so ashamed I had to say that Gerry Garcia might not be a Pilipino.
