Did you know that after Magellan discovered the Philippines, Luzon Island became widely inhabited by citizens of France who arrived via Spain? They were first to arrive in Luzon, fleeing the civil war in Europe. It was they who had the money and could afford to pay their way out from that horrible war.

The refugees spoke Latin, Que sais-je, meaning “What do I know”? They lived under great many certainties as they built a new life. These settlers were mainly Catholic, many of royal blood lineages, educated in Christian schools in France.

Was Pantal river in Dagupan city, actually named after a young widow, Madame de Chantal.

The Lopez name could have possibly come from a French woman named Antoinette de Louppes, whose spelling eventually changed through the years.

Pere Raymond, a Jesuit priest, later became St. Raymond became the patron saint of Mangatarem town today.

Santa Ignasia – In Tarlac, the Ignasian spirit, company of our Lady Blessed Virgin Mary, legend says, Ignasia – a protectress of the house.

The town of Sto. Tomas could have been named after Santo Tomas, patron of Christian schools.

Pope Paul V was a Borghese, possibly the origin of the name Burgos.

Was the province of Isabela named after Baroness Isabelle de Maisonneuve?

Is it possible that the descendants of St. Francis de Sales the Sales of Manaoag town today? There is Mayor Napoleon Sales of Manaoag.

Are the De la Cruzes today named after Elizabeth de Cruzy?

Was the name Urduja lifted from Convent Rue Du-Ha in France circa 1618? In France, the convent like palace was a school for young women.

Could the word “Pangasinan” have originated from the “Lady of Pau” of circa June 14, 1638? Was Pau, meaning a stronghold of a Catholic Group, annexed to the word “ asinan” because of the presence of salt in the area so Pau – sinan (salty). My guess.

Was Tarlac today actually named after the Baroness de “Teula”?

Was Luzon named after the Baroness de Lauzon or Madame de Lauzon, s a friend of several
saints of Pau -(sinan) in the year 1626.

Are the Mendiguarins of Bimmaley town named after Mere de Guerin, who became a saint?

Was Maria Clara, the girlfriend of hero Dr. Jose Rizal, a descendant of Mere Charlotte de Sainte Claire (1603)?

I lifted these from an old, old book owned by the Convent of Mercy.

Thank God for this book, it made me relate so some trivia about Luzon, and my province Pangasinan.
