MERRY Christmas and a Happy New Year!
We in these fabled isles have lately been thrown in contrasting modes.
Happy in the triumph of Miss Pia Wurtzbach of Cagayan de Oro City as Miss Universe.
Our Pangasinense- friend Dale Cabrera, who is based in CdO, texted us his son, Marko, 26, a writer for Senator Bongbong Marcos, was Pia’s classmate in the elementary to high school.
If you ask us, there’s nothing spectacular in a Filipina getting beauty honors even worldwide, as we have a good track in that beautiful field.
What’s news is when we get slammed in an ugly vein.
For sure, we’d feel bad if our bet was in the shoes of Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez! No less than their president (his name fortunately escaped us), had the gall to shout to the four winds that “as far as the Columbians are concerned Miss Columbia is Miss Universe.” That would make them live on a lie.
Enough for the beauty side.
On Tuesday, while we drove to Manila, we passed by the once vast greenery in the provinces of Pampanga and Bulacan, which is covered with floodwaters.
We all saw on television the graphic face of melancholy and destruction of left by typhoons Nona and Onyok!
Its life in its grimmest reality, the good and the bad juxtaposed.
Maybe it’s that part of the year when life has to be hammered well.
It’s up to us to put the appropriate accent, whether positive or negative.
And deep inside, we know when or how to achieve it.
In FVR’s words, as in his book says, we must learn “To Win the Future.”

Our cellphone burst with Christmas and New Year text messages.
We’d like to make this snappy reply to all about our best wishes as we join everyone march to the joyous drums of our hearts … banish the dark forces and stick with the good and the positive.
At a presscon, R1MC staff warned about celebrating the New Year as Happy New Year!
Warning against the reckless use of firecrackers.
We have seen graphic pictures of people with maimed parts of their bodies, cut and broker fingers due to firecrackers.
On this aspect, Mayor Rody Duterte gets our vote for banning firecrackers in celebrating the New Year.

We are at the center of a gripping question- what should prevail: democracy or people power or the rule of law?
The power of our precious vote is being bludgeoned by hard rules of law as in the case of Grace Poe, Pangasinan’s pambato for Malacanang, who is being drowned by legal maneuvers.
Why not allow her to run and let the people decide?
After all, that is the essence of our electoral process.
Grace is so gentle, frail, and helpless physically, but she has steely resolve to run and win.

We greeted Consul Yuda Ueno of Japan on Christmas Day.
The warm and friendly Japanese official “required” us to join him to former Speaker JdV’s 80th birthday bash at the Sampaguita Pictures compound on December 28.
We answered in the affirmative because JdV, our orig boss in media, has already called us twice, aside from his secretary Kit Villanueva’s series of text messages.
Happy birthday, Sir JdV!
