APEC should have united P-noy and Xi

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the  kingdom of heaven,”Matthew 5:10

WHY are the political toughies afraid of Grace Poe?

If you ask us, the “fear” of Poe is eloquent manifestation of her winning streak!

We have our laws, yes, but throwing all the books including the kitchen sink against her in the name of jurisprudence is a death-blow to democracy!

We next cite the case of our dainty former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is in hospital detention due to plunder/corruption charges.

But she remains un-convicted. What’s worse, our legal system moves snail-pace, reminiscent of the universal dictum, “justice delayed, justice denied.”

Like what we wrote here last week, we saw God in Tiananmen Square – the social convergence zone, or the plaza – of Godless Chinese! That was during our visit of Beijing in 2001.

Did President Aquino avoid a head-to-head talk with Chinese leader Xi Jinping?

If so, he missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to promote peace with a bully neighbor!

Isn’t P-noy half Chinese? They — Xi and P-noy – could have talked like brothers, away from legal gobbledygook!

We helped imitate the reunification of the local Muslims, earlier wracked by fratricidal rifts. We thought they, numbering about 70,000 in Pangasinan, can’t be taken for granted.

We congratulate Guv’nor Spines for doing a historic act – legalizing their lives thru the opening of a Muslims Consultative Commission with Guia Macmood, Pangasinan Muslims Assembly president, as prospective commissioner. Lawyer Geraldine Baniqued did the legal framework for this.

Former Bayambang Comelec official Carmen Galang Claveria called up from her new home in Toronto, Canada to say that the Sunday Punch keeps Pangasinenses there informed of local news.

She says she misses our “anything goes” elections but still feels a few political toughies give her the creeps.

When told that mutual friend Tony Rala, her co-editor of the Christian newspaper Lifetimes, has died, she said she sank into a bottomless pit of sadness.

She lives with husband Engr. Willie Claveria, a native of Barangay Malued and their two children in Toronto.

We’re looking forward to Vice Mayor Brian Lim who brought home new posts – president of the Philippine Jaycees and vice president of the World Jaycees – giving flesh and bones to Dagupan politics and raise its level to higher standard.

Not to be bogged down by a corrupt bureaucracy, he could work out or design a mindset with Mayor Belen Fernandez for an issue-oriented governance in the city.

Both Belen and Brian who have hit the world scene with their leadership qualities are in the best position to translate high-level politics into the local scene.
