Not an honorable act

BEBOT VILLAR

THE last State of the Nation Address (SONA) of the President has received different reactions among the different sectors of our society including known personalities from the government. What seems to be good and amazing in SONA is the President’s unique characteristic of how he loves a friend and camaraderie.

He named each one, pinasalamatan niya at inulit ang magagandang katangian na nakita niya sa kanila bilang mga myembro ng kanyang kabinete and as friends. Ganyan ang magandang klase ng kaibigan sa kanyang katauhan!

However, what left a bad taste was the totally uncalled for display of placards degrading the President, inside the very sacred halls of Congress by the Makabayan bloc. I do not question the right of the Makabayan bloc to express their disagreement with the SONA of the President because it is part of the freedom of expression. However, they are supposedly “Honorable.” They should have done it outside of the halls of Congress. It’s part of our Filipino culture not to insult our guests in our house. This is what the Makabayan bloc did.

The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) training team is now preparing for the conduct of the first Trainor’s Training on Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program in Pangasinan tentatively next month. The initial coordination has been made through the office of OIC PD P/Sr. Supt. Rollie Saltat.

DARE was started in 1983 in Los Angeles Police Department in cooperation with Los Angeles Unified School District bilang isang kumpleto at mahabang pamamaraan ng pag-aaral kung paano maiiwasan ng mga bata ang iligal na droga. This program is a series of classroom lectures by a policeman and a jail officer na magtuturo sa mga bata kung paano iiwas sa tukso na gumamit ng illegal drugs.

Initially here in the Philippines, DARE is a 12-year old program sustained by the Gen. Santos City Chapter. Objectives of the program include sustainability of DARE among the children in the province; help pupils recognize the detrimental effects of drugs and other substance including tobacco and resist the influence of dangerous drugs, avoid gangs and violent behavior; and prevent students and non-users from being interested to drug use through education and information.

Earlier, nakapag-conduct na ang DDB ng walong (8) batches ng training na ito sa mga sumusunod na lugar: Laguna, Tagbilaran City, Batangas City, General Santos City at Butuan City.

Grade IV students in public schools will be invited to participate in the program where some forty (40) police officers din ang expected na makibahagi mula sa Police Community Relations (PCR), PCOs and PNCOs mula sa iba’t-ibang bayan sa Pangasinan.

The police-participants who will undergo this training will be part of the pool of DARE teachers who shall echo and teach the pupils the Modules of DARE program to different public schools in Pangasinan in relation to “Pulis Ko, Titser Ko” program of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The DARE program is a good example of unified efforts among our government agencies, i.e., the PNP, DepEd and DDB, to implement the program for a common vision. Unified efforts produce excellent results that’s why I always encourage all the agencies concerned on illegal drugs to do the same.

Last July 15, 2015, when Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Regional Office XI (PDEA RO XI), PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit Eastern Mindanao XI, Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force XI, Davao City Police Office, COMMEL XI, Regional Intelligence Unit XI, Regional Maritime Unit XI, Highway Patrol Group XI, at PNP Crime Laboratory XI joined hands in one operation, in Davao City to enforce multiple search warrants, it resulted in the successful termination of operation of (8) drug dens.

It is worth mentioning that there were thirty (30) drug personalities arrested, seven (7) were killed, 321.1 grams of shabu confiscated worth 2.89 million pesos approximately and 72.9 grams of dried marijuana leaves estimated to P2,551.50.

Kudos to the above-cited law enforcement elements! May your tribe increase!
