A political star is born

“A man’s character is his fate,” –Heraclitus

PRESIDENTIABLE Grace Poe, the phenomenal senator with Pangasinan roots being the daughter of the late FPJ, was in town last Tuesday.

On the invitation of our friend Rosendo “Sendong” So, the graceful senator guested at a presscon at the Star Plaza. She impressed the media with her intellect, communications excellence, alluring persona while answering varied questions from the very personal to the political, geopolitical including foreign affairs.

She showed readiness to lead with impeccable leadership if she is drafted to run for president or vice president.  Those who saw, and interacted with, her were one in the view that she would do Pangasinenses proud if she guns for the Palasyo.

Senator Grace Poe has been in the headlines, page one and in editorials/opinions sections almost daily in major media outlets including those based in the provinces.

She bared her heart to the newsmen tips on how a leader should deal with the nation’s problems, sincerely, competently, and with the national interest in mind, not one’s own – an indirect stab at you-know-who.

It is well known that Vice President Jojo Binay, the leading presidential contender in the SWS and other surveys, has lately been hurting when Grace signed with her Senate colleagues the plunder charge against Binay. Now, the Binay camp is ganging up on her on her citizenship issue.

While in Dagupan, Grace was briefly toured around the public market by Mayor Belen Fernandez, an LP stalwart; their going around raised eyebrows if it had the blessings of Mar Roxas. If so, it would say something on speculations that Grace and Mar are really teaming up in the 2016 presidential race.

While in San Carlos City, Councilor Vido Fermin and City Info Officer Rachel Sapigao said Grace Poe was received like a long-missed balikbayan. Vice Mayor Bogs Resuello and the entire Sanggunian chatted with her like old friends at the city hall. Mayor Ayoy, we heard, was out on official business.

Her lolo, by the way, the orig Fernando Poe Sr., of Barangay Caoayan-Kiling, was a relative of the Samsons, Sorianos, Munozes, all native Carlenians.

By the way, after the 1990 earthquake, Gov. Rafael Colet and this writer toured the city with FPJ accompanied by Mayor Douglas Soriano. Upon reaching Caoayan-Kiling, the natives on the road, probably FPJ’s relatives himself did not first recognize the action star.  When we told them it was FPJ standing before them, an instant embracing, hugging and yelling for residents to come out of their homes followed.

Our next meeting with FPJ was followed later with Mayor Jolly Resuello and Rudy Pou (Pou was their orig surname), climaxing with the city honoring him as most outstanding son – a huge plaque in tow – during the city fiesta in l999.

A GMA man then, Mayor Jolly hid under covers to meet his idol clandestinely. No doubt about it. The people’s affection for FPJ is now on Senator Grace, and you know what that means in any election! Pangasinenses – the whole nation will show it with a vengeance.

President or vice president, Grace Poe already looks like a sure winner. Did we not describe her phenomenal?

Let’s just hope and pray she won’t follow the father’s electoral fate when he ran for president.

NOTES: The town of Bayambang is embroiled in controversy. It seems politics has gone to the head of Mayor Ric Camacho too early blinding him not to appreciate the big picture. That sizzling town, catapulted to modern amenities by a working partnership between government and entrepreneurship ignited by favorite son, business mogul Cezar T. Quiambao, should be able to sustain its gains by electing business-minded leaders the likes of Councilor Levin Uy, or Vice Mayor Melvyn Junio.
