Iron hand approach

BEBOT VILLAR

By Bebot Villar

PANGASINAN has new officer-in-charge police director. Let’s welcome P/Senior Superintendent Belli Bagaas Tamayo.

He succeeds P/Sr. Supt. Reynaldo Biay, who was OIC-PD for several months, he started around August last year.

The only thing I know about P/Sr. Supt. Tamayo is he is a mistah of P/Sr. Supt. Bong Caramat and Sr. Supt. Eric Noble. If my informant is correct, he supposedly hails from Calasiao.

Biay is now assigned to a higher position daw sa regional office. Good luck sa kanya!

I distinctly remember Biay’s baptism of fire. It was the shooting rampage inside the Pangasinan National High School by a policeman that led to the death of four persons and the wounding of three others, most of them teachers. Reason? Dahil diumano sa hindi masingil na pautang.

Of course, we all know that the suspect was arrested and charged. Bahala na ang court dyan.

Biay succeeded P/Sr. Supt. Sterling Raymund Blanco. Blanco had problems din during his short stint as OIC-PD of Pangasinan because it was during his watch when Urbiztondo Mayor Jun Balolong was shot dead with his police escort.

Some suspects were arrested and jailed although there are some doubts about their involvement while others, especially the bereaved families, are still waiting for the mastermind/s to be arrested and charged, too.

Of course no one knows what can happen in the future. Ayaw nating maging pessimist but we need to be prepared for any eventuality.

Meanwhile, as the province goes through the rigodon of OIC-PD in Pangasinan, I notice that there is no intensity in the campaign vs. illegal drugs. Kulang na kulang ang suporta mula sa mga nasa LGUs.

As a result, we are seeing more drug pushers and users in our midst.

Of course, in fairness, lately we have been seeing more arrests being made, albeit small time pushers. There has been an increase in anti-drug operations. If this is a sign that finally nagising na ang mga opisyal natin, salamat naman. As the young people would say: “Eh di Wow!”

But more should be done to fight the drug menace.

Looking deeper into the drug problem, I find it alarming na we are seeing more drug users in our communities? Bakit parang wala silang kinatatakutan.

The war against illegal drugs cannot be won with mere lip service. We need to use the iron hand approach. Kamay na bakal dapat dahil hindi basta-basta ang kalaban. We need to make an example of some if the campaign has to be taken seriously and begin to intimidate the drug syndicates and users.

Going back to new OIC-PD Tamayo, he’s taking his new assignment at a time na mainit ang pulitika. The 2016 elections for the top post in Pangasinan is going to be the “Fight of the Titans”!

Meanwhile, have you noticed lately how a number of mediamen have already taken sides, defending their own political patrons, particularly those who are seeking election or re-election in 2016.

Watching and listening to them, you would think they are politicos, not professional media practitioners. Kanya-kanya silang gustong kandidato, kanya-kanyang manok. That’s okay, because that is still their right, but what is disgusting about their demeanor is when they start below-the-belt and personal na batikusan.

I note how some of them have even started to regress mentally, getting carried away by their own propaganda. Huwag padadala masyado sa sulsol ng kung sino man. Cool lang kayo! Why not simply praise your political patron to high heavens instead of resorting to name calling, insulting your fellow mediamen? You may not be aware but you are now a laughing stock to your listeners and readers!

Why not be like lawyers who can argue their cases rationally and intensely but after the court proceedings, magkaibigan pa rin at nagtatawanan paglabas nila. The bottom line is, have an intelligent discussion based on facts, at hindi mga kuwentong barbero ang usapan.

I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the bereaved families of newsman Rannie Manaois. The same deepest sympathy for those left behind by Rhodora Palinar, a good writer.

They will be truly missed. May their souls rest in peace.
