Lack of propriety or lack of respect?

Gonz Duque

By Gonzalo Duque

THIS is about propriety and professionalism going haywire — or something worse, much, much worse.

It involves, of all people, a Northern Luzon education (kuno) official promoting sports, sportsmanship; being a person expected to play by the rules.

Remember Aesop’s Fables about the fly on top of the carabao’s back?

Things like these come to mind as we pore on the inexplicability of a DepEd official in Region 1 specifically tasked to see the youth become sportsmen or grow responsibly to become leaders of the community and country sufficiently armed with adequate knowledge and skills marinated in sportsmanship.

But this man we are talking about is mired in impropriety, possibly including corruption, not befitting a DepEd official on sports.

Why so?

Because, as black and white records will show, the hopeless, or to put it more bluntly, pathetic employee masquerading as defender of the faith — and probably do a somersault in connection with his supposed duty to promote physical fitness and development among the youth through a sports program that is being pursued with utmost devotion by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

But, alas, this guy, Edel Abalos who now sounds, to us Edel Aba-Loss or Aba-Lost is doing exactly what he is not supposed to be doing, kawawang koboy talaga!

But for the good fortune — or good karma — of the Bonuan Boquig folk — their multi-purpose center that will also serve as a makeshift facility for sports, evacuation, senior citizens, PTA and indoor sports is slated for completion soon…. yes, ok na, despite the unthinkable opposition by school principal Linda Ventinella and hmmm….Supt. Gloria Torres, of course, with the orchestration of the “Lost Command” — Edel Abalos.

All their opposition antics were convincingly blasted to pieces by a phalanx led by planning officer Romy Rosario and City Engineer Virginia Rosario, who were joined by the PTA officials and senior citizens led by Atty. Cornelia Espanol, in a public hearing presided by Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo.

More than the project’s completion, what attracts or what baffles our imagination is the ill manner this Edel Abalos has been showing lately.

His tantrums began when he chose to mis-manage the DBL (Dagupan Basketball League), which he irregularly — or illegally — converted into an NGO.

Why the conversion? Your guess is as good as ours. By his well-known penchant for unusual things he was behind an activity that others will describe as hanky panky and the forced use “for-free” of the Astrodome.

By the way, Mayor Belen is squarely for sports development, particularly in training our boys and girls to win at the Region One Athletic Association, where a year-long training is needed and provision for adequate sports facilities.

When our mayor inquired why tickets are being sold, the not-so-humble Edel began ranting, uttering remarks as “nag-iba na si mayor, pagkatapos nating ikampanya! Ito ba ang isusukli niya?”

He pretended to have campaigned for Belen (ha?? malilintikan ang kumag na ito sa Civil Service!), but in her heart, BTF doubts it, if he did campaign for her, as he arrogantly claimed.

Edel Abalos has since embarked on a foolish, idiotic operation to embarrass the mayor, pressuring all to abandon the Boquig project. This guy even lied that BTF decreased the R1AA budget which, in truth and in fact, she increased by P 1-million.

And the facts are staring him in the face.

To cut a long story short, dapat imbitahin ni Mayor ang kumag na ito sa CSC at tignan natin ang kanyang pakana.

The Mindanao “massacre” — nakakapanlulumo talaga, lalo na sa mga pamilya ng 44 soldiers na namatay sa mis-encounter — should validate all the more our need for a national leader with immense capability to act on a severe challenge like it.

We hark back to our old view — if the national leadership continues to be un-feeling, unsympathetic to former President GMA even when all her co-accused have been bailed out, may mga darating pang trahedya sa administrasyon na ito.

No less than the revered Bishop Oscar Cruz and Arguelles are already for the release of Gloria.

Our man, Rody Duterte, may be tough on many issues — but, we’re sure, is soft in the correct places, validating all the more his preparedness for the highest position in the land.
