Bipolar II Disorder
By Oscar V. Cruz
IN layman’s language, it can be said in general that a “Bipolar Disorder” per se has reference to a transit from one extreme adverse behavioral pattern to another opposite likewise markedly erratic actuation mode, viz., from one adverse behavioral pole to another one in the opposite in terms of well manifest contradictory change in thought, feeling and actuation series i.e. “Bipolar”. So it is that Psychiatry speaks of“Bipolar Disorders” – in the plural form. And the “Personality Disorder” is thus expressed in plural, considering that there are in effect two species of opposing inordinate action and reaction manifestations, i.e., “Disorders”. One more thing, the malady is in the sphere of the so-called “Mood Disorders” in terms of afflictions in personal disposition and pursuant conduct. So is it that there are “Bipolar I Disorder”and “Bipolar II Disorder”.
Specifically in conjunction with “Bipolar II Disorder”, this is understood as the interchanging mood and consequent behavior from the so-called “Hypomanic” situation and the “Depressive” condition. So it is that according to the much-appreciated and well-read Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, American Psychiatric Association (DMS IV), 1995, pp. 359-363.
“Hypomanic Disorder”: This personal liability is said to have and manifest the following more noticeable mood behaviors: 1. “Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity.” 2.“Decreased need of sleep.” 3. “More talkativeness than usual.” 4. Flight of ideas” 5. “Psycho-motor agitation.” Etc., etc.
“Depressive Disorder”: This personal arrearage on the other hand manifests the following actuation patterns: 1. “Dejection, gloominess, cheerlessness.” 2.“Inadequacy, worthlessness, low self-esteem.” 3. “Brooding, worrisome, self-critical.”4. “Negative, pessimistic.” 5. “Remorseful.” Etc., etc.
One thing appears definite and defined: “Bipolar II Disorder” in general has reference to “clinically significant distress in social, occupational or other areas of functioning”. This means and implies that the said negative personality constitution is anything but an asset in relational interaction in a family, in a community, and in society as a whole. Considering that every human person is a social being and yet proves to be socially impaired, this is a big behavioral liability in getting married, in heading a family and the like.
Although it may have occasional or periodic remissions – such as through the intake of the so-called “Uppers” or “Downers” pills – it appears that “Bipolar II Disorder” is not really susceptible of complete and permanent cure. So sad yet so true.
