No medical use for Marijuana
By Bebot Villar
IT looks like na-“Wow, Mali!” ang ma-impluwensyang Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) last week when it justified the use of marijuana for “medical use”
Many are wondering, including yours truly, kung ano ang naging batayan ng CBCP sa kanilang statement na maaaring maging lunas ng sakit na cancer ang marijuana?
I do not share Archbishop Socrates Villegas’ position that “morally justifiable” ang pag-gamit ng marijuana sa mga cancer patients. Since when na naging moral ang pag-gamit ng illegal drugs? Baka naman after this ay sabihin din nilang “morally justifiable” ang pagnanakaw dahil sa sobrang kahirapan ng buhay?
The danger about Fr. Soc’s statement is it gives the wrong signal to people who will now say: “Wow, okay ang pag-gamit ng marijuana basta maysakit ka.” Or people may also think na it is a go-signal para sa kanila to cultivate hectares of marijuana plantation!
That is not okay!
If CBCP only did an exhaustive research, it will know na wala pang na-discover na medical use ang marijuana. Wala pa. And medical experts in the world will attest to this.
Marijuana is still highly-addictive at nakakasira sa kalusugan ng tao, which is why its use is strictly prohibited by law. Marijuana is destructive at hindi kailanman naging curative.
For everyone’s information, marijuana is still second to shabu sa listahan ng mga most abused illegal drugs in our country. Consider how many of our youth have been victimized… how many family bonds were destroyed… and how many crimes were committed because of it.
Kami sa Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) ay walang nakikitang kabutihang dulot sa pag-gamit ng marijuana. It is already a fact that there are lots of adverse effects from chronic or long term use of marijuana like impairment of motor skills, respiratory problems, pre-mature babies, low birth weight, abortion or stillbirth, panic or state of anxiety sometimes accompanied with paranoia, burn-out, infections and dulls the mind if regularly used. Pag-bali-baligtarin man natin ang mga dahon, buto, sanga at puno nito, pawing kasamaan pa rin ang makikita nating dulot nito.
So how can anyone say that marijuana can cure cancer patients?
The data and articles posted on the internet cannot be used as basis to support claim that marijuana can be used for medical purposes. Internet is an open space where anyone can post any article. Isn’t it possible na maaaring pakana lamang ng mga malalaking illegal drugs traders sa mundo ang mga posted articles to support the claim in order to boost their business?
While we are one with CBCP in its intention to help find ways to cure the cancer patients, the Department of Health only recommends the medicines available in the market for cancer patients, “medical marijuana” dahil wala pa talagang pag-aaral to support the claim that marijuana can be used for medical purposes.
Saan ba kasi sa Republic Act 9165 makikita na OK daw ang marijuana for medical use? Ang meron tayo ay ang mga adverse effects as I earlier stated. Kaya nga mula sa United Nations, World Health Organization, Commission on Narcotic Drugs and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, bawal ang cannabis plant alias marijuana!
CBCP can help our families more if it actively supports not only our campaign against illegal drugs but in rehabilitating the victims.
