Young Roots
By Johanne Margarette R. Macob
PANGASINAN, our beloved province, has continuously been making a name in the country as well as in the world with its developments in different areas of governance.
We are doing well in tourism, as evidenced by the developments in major tourist spots and the growing number of visitors we welcome. We are good in agriculture, providing rice supply on top of other agri-products, not only for the province but for the nation. A few weeks ago, leaders of the premier province of Cebu came around to replicate our best practices, particularly in the health sector. I can go on with the list of accomplishments. The fact is, we are, gradually but surely, getting nearer to our mission of making Pangasinan the top province of the Philippines.
However, as many if not all of us are aware, in the past days, our province was put in the limelight, but not in a good light. We have received numerous prayers from people all over the world. Thanks, but no thanks, as these prayers were regarding the “flesh-eating disease” that is nowhere to be found in the province. We don’t have any contagious disease here. We, on the contrary, have one of the best health services in the nation.
At first, I wanted to dwell on media responsibility but I know that the media network, and all of us, have already learned our lessons. As the governor has said, let us stop blaming and focus instead on promoting the province.
Indeed, I want to request all particularly those who have shared the wrong report to please take the time to belie such. Not only do media have the responsibility to be professional and rectify false reports, nor the sole responsibility to disseminate information and influence people. The now high-tech world empowers everyone to speak up. It has given us all voices. We can ring our families, especially those living in other places. We can post on Facebook, even as simple as “Pangasinan has no contagious disease” or “we are a healthy and lovely province.” We can share helpful info. Further, we can send multiple emails.
This is yet another challenge to us, Pangasinenses. Let us join hands to cure what can be cured, to move on from what cannot be changed, and to do better as people. Hooray to us, hooray Pangasinan!
