Big catch in Urdaneta City

LAST week, ang ating Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Regional Office-1 at Philippine National Police (PNP) closely collaborated for the successful conduct of two drug buy-bust operations in Pangasinan, resulting in the arrests of more drug pushers.

In Urdaneta City, isang babae na nagpapanggap na bilang businesswoman, ay nahuli sa buy-bust operation.  So far, this was the biggest shabu haul in the city this month. Nahulihan siya na may dalang six (6) sachets of shabu estimated at P300,000.

Ang aking ikinatuwa ay ang pagkahuli sa suspect on the same day the Dangerous Drugs Board conferred an award to Urdaneta’s Finest for its no-nonsense campaign contra illegal drugs in the past year.

Sana ang ganitong performance ng Urdaneta police will continue without let-up in the months ahead. Naniniwala ako na at the rate they are going, the Urdaneta police will soon catch the big fish na tina-target nila.

Urdaneta, as we now know, has become a major transshipment point ng drug financiers sa region 1 because of its strategic location. This was the reason why we kept on prompting the police in that city to do more. Hanggang nakaka-operate ang drug dealers diyan, maraming pamilya sa Pangasinan ang nasisira.

Congratulations are in order para kay Superintendent Jeff Fanged and his men. Ganun din kay Mayor Boboom Perez for his support in the anti-drug campaign.

In urban centers, traffic has always been identified as one of the major problems.

First, patuloy sa pagdami ng mga sasakyan, pero hindi naman nadadagdagan ang mga kalsada. Second, lumolobo ang populasyon ng bawat lugar at sa dami ng mga taong tumatawid sa mga kalye, hindi maiiwasang babagal ang daloy ng trapiko.

In Dagupan City, to decongest the daily gridlock sa maliit na downtown area ng lungsod, nagpapatupad ng isang traffic experiment si Mayor Belen Fernandez.

At so far, naging maganda ang naging feedback ng maraming commuters, although may mga nagrereklamo rin, lalo na ang mga jeepney drivers na hindi basta-bastang makapagsakay at makapagbaba ng mga pasahero sa mga hindi designated areas.

Pero, katulad nga ng sinasabi ni Mayor Fernandez, ito’y isang experiment lamang at sa pamamagitan ng feedback ng iba’t ibang sector. If found effective, maaaring gawin itong permanent o kaya’y calibrate it some more pa para mas maging kapaki-pakinabang.

Sa buong Pangasinan kasi, Dagupan is the only place kung saan dumadaan lahat ang mga sasakyan mula at papunta sa iba’t ibang bayan at siyudad ng lalawigan.

Idagdag mo pa rito ang mga sasakyan ng mga traders at private motorists at ang mga tricycle.

Hopefully, the traffic experiment will prove to be successful before the city hold its Bangus Festival upang lalong maging attractive sa mga tourists, negosyante at mamimili sa lungsod.
