Christmas countdown: The gift of appreciation

JOHANNE R. MACOB

By Johanne Margarette R. Macob

THE “best time of the year” is here. Despite all the depressing happenings particularly in our country, we cannot deny the fact that we, Filipinos have to celebrate on December 25, simple as may that celebration be. So yes, still, hola, Christmas season!

To honor the season, I will write about the five best gifts I know this entire month, one gift for each week. We don’t have to have money or all the things money can buy to be able to offer the best gifts. As the cliche goes, “the best things in life are free” and so do the best gifts.

I’m starting my countdown now, the first best gift on my list: the gift of appreciation.

We often take people and their good deeds for granted. We forget to say our thank you’s when saying this wouldn’t cost us a thing. We do not pay attention until the person gets tired of his/her kind act.

This should remind us that great accomplishments always start from little, sometimes, even from silly ideas. You’ll never know how your appreciation can change someone’s life or view of things. You’ll never know how it will change you, as well. So join me in continuing, (or start to), expressing your appreciation.

Say “thank you” to the person who opens the door for you.
Say “thank you” to the person who picks up your stuff.
Say “thank you” to the person who fixes your hair.
Say “thank you” to the person who makes you happy.
Say “thank you” to the person who loves you, and even to that person who doesn’t.
Say “thank you”… (fill in this list.)

And smile often. Life may be presenting problems that are really hard to overcome but more than anything else, life is a gift to be appreciated.

If it’s a good thing then it’s a blessing and if it’s a bad thing, it’s a learning. Thanks be to God. So let us not lose the chance to appreciate everything, everything — the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the winter, the summer.

And hey, do not ever forget to appreciate yourself. You are a blessing.

A blessed Christmas and thanks everyone! 🙂
