Com. Padaca and a trustworthy Comelec

You will be punished by the Lord of hosts

With thunder and earthquake and great noise

With storm and tempest and the flame of devouring fire.”

Isaiah 29:6

WHILE most quarters are talking about the First 100 days of our LGU execs like our Mayor Belen Fernandez, they do not say if they have been a part of the success or failure of governance.

Have they helped in their own little way? Or have they been working clandestinely to block her progress?

In the much-lamented Dagupan case, there have been too much lamentation of failures, misuse of public funds, etc.

Let the courts of law handle these.

What we should collectively and individually do is to put in our humble share in the mayor’s herculean effort to restore and move the city.

Residents of Basista, Pangasinan are praying that the disqualification complaint filed by Joy Perez against re-elected Mayor Manolito de Leon would soon be resolved by the Comelec.

Philippine jurisprudence is clear against non-Filipino citizens including those enjoying dual citizenship, which applies to De Leon.

There’s an on-going debate though on who should sit in case De Leon is finally disqualified.  Will it be Perez? Or Vice Mayor Jolly “JR” Resuello, son of the late San Carlos City Mayor Julian Resuello.

Most Basista residents are inclined to Perez since she got the second highest number of votes, only 67 votes behind De Leon. Resuello partisans argue that even if disqualified he allegedly enjoyed their mandate.

Let’s hope the Comelec will make a Solomonic decision on this exciting issue.

As a rule, people do not mind being bludgeoned by calamities and disasters even if their very lives are in peril. They give little thought to the lessons calamities bring.

The tragedy that befell Bohol, Cebu and neighbour provinces in the Visayas was due to a sinkhole that has progressively worsened through time.

Sinkholes have been found in Baguio City and other places.

The government should not take sinkholes lightly. If they can go wrong, they will.

If Nature’s balance is damaged, the logical consequence is disaster.

With SK politics junked – let’s hope it’s junked for good! – the government has resoundingly steeled its resolve to reform the government up to the barangays. Let’s hope it stays that way.

The decision was a tribute to the Commission on Elections under a no-nonsense Chairman, Sixto Brillantes.

We hope competent, honest and responsible candidates will win in the Oct. 28 barangay elections to hasten the President’s reforms drive.

We have not seen fort a long time former Dagupan Bombo manager, now DZXL news talent Chris Estolas, a former Bombo associate of Comelec Commissioner Grace Padaca.

Until he called, which coughed up an exchange on a subject of “media as a powerful tool for good governance” last Friday.

In a forum not long way back, we introduced at the National Press Club former Isabela Governor, now Comelec Commissioner Grace Padaca as a shining jewel in the Philippine government.

We said that well-meaning media leaders like Grace will always be assets in public service because of their adherence to truth, transparency, enlightened leadership.

We have heard a lot of stories about the pretty and powerful radio commentator before she was catapulted to the governorship.

The Padaca-masa honeymoon, however, was cut short by big business in her province.

Not allowing the potential of a good leader to go to waste, President Noynoy appointed her Comelec commissioner.

Politics and the press, you know, make an ideal combination if based on unyielding commitment to good governance and the pursuit of truth and excellence.

Chris told us that Grace would rather stay in the Comelec to help Brilliantes give the Comelec a good name.

She told Chris she couldn’t give her sweet “OO” to province mates clamoring her to run again for governor.

Isabela’s loss is Comelec’s gain.

Eventually, the nation’s.

NOTES: This is a devastatingly sad news: After hubby Gerry Garcia’s death last July, our friend Muriel “Boots” G. Garcia of Basista and Quezon City succumbed to cardiac arrest last Tuesday, Oct. 16.

A lively lady, Boots often with Gerry dropped by our home in Bonuan and Loyola Heights to invite us out.

Her remains will be interred at 2 p.m. today, Sunday at the Manila Memorial Park.

Rest in peace, friend.

Prayers, too, for the family of our Jaycee friend Raffy Villamil who died recently.
