Fr. Soc talks on good governance

Gonz Duque

By Gonzalo Duque

LAST Thursday, our LNU Dukes “massacred” UPANG-Phinma’s Flames in the hotly fought UCAAP games, 87-60!

More exciting details on this in the other pages.

Sports columnist Jess Garcia has the details.

OK, analysts attribute the Dukes’ success to at least three factors: the team’s cohesiveness, inspiration and the administration’s all-out support. And also, the superb coaching by Angel Gumarang, front-running candidate for barangay chairman of Bonuan Gueset.

If you ask us, it’s the One Great Almighty out there who’s largely behind the winning.

The dramatic triumph was a timely gift to LNU’s founder-president the late Paco Duque, whose birthday falls on Sept. 24.

Salamat sa inyong lahat!

We wish to felicitate Archbishop Socrates Villegas on his birthday on Sept.28!

Ka birthday ni former President Diosdado Macapagal.

Happy birthday, Father Soc!

Don’t wonder if we address him “Father Soc,” instead of “Bishop Soc.” It’s the way he wants to be addressed.

On two occasions, we made predictions on Fr. Soc’s life. We predicted his ascent to the presidency of the CBCP. This time, in a short period of time, hopefully, our crystal ball says he will be elected to the pantheon of cardinals.

We are struck by his humility. For his stature, the good Bishop could have lashed angrily at the increasing evil forces in our political system. His cool, sober style touches more the inner chords of people.

Let’s hope our would-be barangay officials won’t anymore use guns, gold, and goons in order to win.

At LNU’s Founders’ Day, Fr. Soc spoke about good governance with brotherly and fatherly touch.

He urged barangay officials especially the barangay candidates to first, 1. Be grateful to God. Second, to be generous to others and our fellowmen, and third, to be real stewards of God for the people.

In other words, they should be trustworthy in serving the people under God.

Tayo ring bumoboto, we know that we get the government we deserve…. for electing the kind of officials we now have.

Sino ba ang mga dapat iboto?

Scrutinize the candidates. How do they stand vis-a-vis our problems—basura, drugs, illegal fish pens, health and sanitation, etc…

Watch out of people who steal from the public’s funds; you know them… this abuse of power, the continued stealing and robbery of our tax payers’ money should stop!

We received heartwarming response and text messages to our column item last week on late erpat former Gov. Paco Duque, founder of PhilHealth with its seed, Medicare.

Paco also conceptualized the LNU, starting with a college of medicine.

Very much ahead of his time, erpat was an outstanding Rotarian and political leader, having skippered the Liberal Party in the province until his death.

It must be providential that his junior—Dr. Francisco T. Duque III—would take over the DOH later. Pincoy expanded PhilHealth’s coverage to include almost all sectors.

Now, it’s almost impossible for any Filipino not to be covered by Phil-Health.

As soon as we got back to Dagupan, we were besieged by queries concerning the controversial fish pens. If some insidious hands are working like termites, it may be timely to get Bishop Villegas into the picture in order to genuinely eliminate the illegal fish pens.

Anta yo, nadadayew so Dagupan ed biec taew lapud mananam ya bangus na Dagupan.  Agtayo lalaokay kalokoan so panag asikaso tan pampabona sirin na bangus!

Attention: City Agriculturist Emma Molina and Task Force head Ronnie Cayabyab!

FLASH! The Regional Trial Court has issued a warrant of arrest against Bombo Radyo announcer Bogs Toribio alyas Edmund Salacup on the libel case we filed against him, the radio station he is working in, and other broadcasters who maligned this columnist and our university. We expect other respondents to be issued similar warrants of arrest.

We wonder why the local KBP under a weakling president has allowed this abuse of press freedom unchecked.

Watch out for developments.
