What now, Guv?

WHAT’S happening? Nakaka-inip ang maghintay kung anong activity ang isusunod ng provincial government to sustain the anti-drug abuse campaign ng ni-launch nila.
All of a sudden, natigil yata ang action nila. Wala na akong narinig na concrete program sa sinasabing pag-revitalize ng Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Coordinating Council. The last thing we heard about it before the election ay nagkaroon ng meeting, presided by Vice Gov. Ferdie Calimlim on the instruction ni Gov. Amado Espino.
When I expressed my disappointment earlier through this column because I hardly received updates or plans from the provincial government regarding its anti-drug abuse campaign, I felt gratified nang marining ko ang firm commitment na gagalaw na ang provincial government. I hope it was not meant simply to keep me quiet being the chairman of Dangerous Drugs Board because this is a fight to ensure a better future for our children and the next generations to come through a drug-free society.
I knew about the symposium na ginawa kasama ang mga kabataan sa Narciso Ramos Sports Complex sa Lingayen na may candle lighting ceremony pa nga. Pero after that, wala na naman tayong narining. What’s next? Huwag naman sana ningas cogon lamang ang inumpisahan. While I still give them the benefit of the doubt, I hope huwag sanang patagalin ang suspension ng activities dahil ang operations ng illegal drugs ay hindi tumitigil.
Ang worry ko pa ngayon ay dahil sa postponement ng Sangguniang Kabataan elections at walang hold over provision, unti-unting mabubuwag na ang sector na ito. Paano na ang mga kabataan na sila pa ang target ng mga syndicates ng illegal drugs? Through SK, may mga chapters that actively supported our campaign. Ngayon, sino ang magpapatuloy ng mga yan? That’s why I’m banking on our provincial leaders to take the lead dahil constituents nila itong mga kabataang ito.
I’m happy sa nangyayari sa Dagupan City. Talagang serious ang city government led by Mayor Belen Fernandez. She convened the Dagupan City Anti-Drug Abuse Council last Tuesday aided by police chief, Supt. Chris Abrahano. Dati na nating kasangga si Mayor Belen laban sa droga and in fact, national awardee pa siya ng DDB when she was still vice mayor.
Ito ang maganda pag ang mayor at ang police, kasama ang community, ay nagkaka-isa sa kanilang advocacy. Ang recommendation ni hepe for barangay drug-clearing operations ay magagawa ng Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils (BADACs), katulong siyempre ang BADAC Auxiliary Teams at mga kabataan sa mga barangay.
Ito na yong sinasabi ko na the campaign must start sa grassroots level. Ang mahigpit na pagbantay sa barangay ay strong weapon to fight illegal drugs. Isipin nyo, sa kultura natin ay maraming tsismoso sa mga barangay. Gamitin natin ang situation na ito sa pagsugpo sa droga. Yang mga tambay at mga tsismoso ang nakaka-alam kung sino ang mga strangers sa lugar nila, sino at saan ang may suspicious activities, sino yong may itinatago at kung bakit mabilis ang pag asenso ng isang tao sa barangay nila. Then, our lawmen, through their intelligence gathering, can validate the raw information they gather. I’m sure hindi makaka-take off ang mga pushers sa kanilang lugar kapag ganito ang set-up.
I’m also happy to know that in my talk with Engr. Rosendo So of the famous Abono partylist, gusto rin niyang maging puspusan ang campaign against illegal drugs sa bayan ng Rosales. Sendong, a very humble and generous person, is a strong supporter of Rosales Mayor Susan Casareno. He assured me he will do his best para magtulungan sila ni Mayor Susan at ang DDB and other agencies to end the drug menace sa lugar nila. (During the time of ex-mayor Ric Revita ay ipinakita din niya yong dapat na gawin sa mga taong nasa likod ng illegal drugs. Alam nyo na ang ibig kong sabihin dito).
Then, in my recent USATV program “Deretsahan” (aired live every Saturday at 10:00 a.m.) ay napag-usapan namin with our guest, Alaminos City Mayor Arthur Celeste, itong laban vs illegal drugs sa lugar niya. The mayor affirmed na he is all-out in the war against drugs. Mayor Art laughed off silly allegations na silang Celeste brothers ay “drug lords” every election time. But after the elections, tahimik uli ang mga kalaban nila. I guess ang matinding enemy nila ay hindi droga kundi bunganga ng mga political rivals nila.
Plans are underway na for the launching of an all-out drive against illegal drugs, not only in Alaminos City but in the entire first district. Kasama nila ang DDB. Basta sama-samang ipakita ang pagkaka-isa laban sa droga, goodbye na ang problemang ito sa ating probinsya.
So let’s do it now or we will regret later.
