Election 101: The dos and don’ts

JOHANNE R. MACOB

By Johanne Margarette R. Macob

INDEED, time has passed so fleetly that tomorrow (again, tomorrow) we – or at least more than 1.6 million of us Pangasinenses, among millions other Filipinos – will be exercising our rights to suffrage.

Apart from a checklist of our chosen candidates, I believe there are a number of things we must remember to do, and not to do as well, on May 13. I hope my list below will serve you well as it does me.

THE ELECTION DOS
1.  Check your precinct number beforehand, the information is available at the Comelec website at www.comelec.gov.ph
2. Better do a little research on the candidates – backgrounds/ track records, platforms, and the like – such will be a good basis for cherry-picking from among those paraphernalia posted or dispersed.
3. Do come as early as possible at your precinct, the earlier the better to avoid the crowd and possible hassles.
4. Cast your vote, make sure they would be counted by shading the “deciding” circles properly.

THE ELECTION DON’TS
1. Do not insist on voting if you know too well that you did not register, that’s just pathetic and unfair (starting up trouble or something).
2. Stay away from the circles beside the names of  trapos (taditional politicians), do not base your voting just on the aesthetics of the posters, the knockout tune and lyrics of the jingles, or on face value, leadership is way beyond those shallow criteria.
3. Thus, do not just shade the decisive circles just for the sake of being able to experience doing such or for completing the maximum number of such, i.e., for the section on 12 senators.
4. Never, ever cheat. Hey, that’s not even an examination that has black and white, precise answers! Vote from the heart… and from the mind.

To sum everything up, just keep up with your most clever self. Happy voting! May the best contenders win.
