A date with 3 governors

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and thwart the cleverness of the clever, “1 Cor 1: 19. ”

LAST Tuesday we had a coffee date at Kenny Rogers at the Sulu area with two former Pangasinan governors, both bar topnotchers, Vicente Millora and Demetrio Demetria.

In our greenhorn days in the local media, Kuya Vic was our favorite source on local government news. He was then board member, then vice governor and eventually governor when he filled the vacancy left by Tito Primicias who was plucked by Bung Ferdinand for the 1967 senate slate.

Like Kuya Vic who trashed his Batasang Pambansa confreres Arturo Tolentino, Doy Laurel, et al in floor debates, Demet impressed us with his lucid mind, graduating at the top of his law class at the University of the East and the Philippine bar the following year.

Did you know that Demet is a congressional candidate in the 5th district? To which we asked why he was busy as a bee with his Manila clients rather campaign in the province. The former Justice Secretary said “they know who to vote. “ The rather wry remark spilled the beans, his bitter view of Philippine elections compounded – not healed – by the PCOS machines. Demet, it seems, has lost trust in the electoral process.

Before we parted, we received a call from another former governor, the immensely popular Oscar Orbos with whom we were to meet at an art exhibit (with Cesar Duque and Cezar Quiambao) Thursday evening at the Robinson Galleria.

The three intimated their Pangasinan gubernational choices on May 13. Two are for Spines, one for Nani. Guess who?

We are reprinting a column item that appeared in another paper citing the humility of former Speaker Joe de Venecia. Occasion was the entry of JDV to the roster of members of the Fishpond Owners and Operators Assn of Dagupan Inc. (Foofadai).

The columnist said “Someone in the group, Nap Manuel, was impressed with JDV, “describing him as sikat world wide but still humble and makes you feel liked … JDV is my guy. Talagang great man. ”

Candidates will find the final stretch a killing suspense.

Those who enjoy media surveys must be eating their hearts out if their paid ads and plugs would translate into votes. The clever ones who have secretly (that’s what they think) invaded special groups are smiling (at their own risk).

But wiser are they who have conscientiously done their homework even with little politicking relying on the judgment of the intelligent sector, concededly a minority but influential ala INC block, united for good government. This group is, in point of fact, the nation’s redeeming feature in its much-abused democracy.

Whatever happens, our candidates are playing a vital role in sustaining the democratic ideal in spite of the abuses. The conscientious don’t lose hope in the Final Arbiter – definitely not the Comelec – who will make things work.

It’s still an imperfect society, but we know that the Hand of God won’t allow the rouges’ continued misrule.

Keep your fingers crossed.

NOTES: At the final stretch, we want to see the following in the finish line Belen and Benjie, Brian and Michael, Alfie, Maybelyn, Karlos, Jigs, Jess, Alvin, Marlyn, Joey, Solo, Marvin, Saysi, Red,  Pacoy, Fred, Marianne, Beep Beep, Emong, Bobby, Salvy, Max. Hope we don’t miss any in the end, we are all brothers and sisters desiring good governance. It’s in the approach that we differ… Basista concede that Pol Bataoil will edge out Kim Lokin in the House race. Joy Perez and JR Resuello are leading the mayoral team… Pre PNoy visit shows Spines breaking away in the sprint to the finish line … Art Lomibao has reduced Ferdie Calimlim’s lead by a mile … After a slip, Wilson is back in toe-to-toe slugfest with Mark Macanlalay… Al Fernandez to the query, who is Dagupan bet, says “aBelen lara.”
