Vote buying

When someone says, “trust me,” hold on to your wallet.” Anon

YOU should get a copy of the latest— Valentine’s – edition of Pacebook, a Dagupan-based national magazine.

A young girl who saw the magazine’s cover at MouseHouse pulled the arm of her ma and said “Mommy, mali ang spelling o!” Yes, Pacebook, not Facebook.

In its own way, the paper sets the pace, from the view window of a local wag of the wedding rites of Jimboy Navarro and Beth Llamas. It was held atop a hill in Colisao, San Fabian with sponsors led by 4th District stars, former Speaker JDV and gorgeous wife Rep. Gina de Venecia.

You’ll wonder at the Publisher’s Notes with the head  “Love and Politics not Strange Bedfellows.”  As in life, the clash between good and bad extends up to the vow of fellowmen to live a life of service.

Lucky is La Patria if it is able to raise mga anak ng bayan whose hearts are for the public uplift.

The issue has Jimmy Licauco’s foray on Soul Mates. Ditto with Al Mendoza’s sensual column on Mr. Dick.

And so the election season could be a season for love offering for a constituency, whoever best serves. Among the local bets with public service vows with a good play are Cong. Gina de Venecia and Pol Bataoil, the Ebdanes of Zambales, mayoral bets Belen Fernandez, Ming Rosario and Wilson de Vera.

Regular columnist Orly  Guirao chats about vice gubernatorial bet Art Lomibao while Jess Perez’s column head “Espino is unbeatable.” Non-candidate Gonzalo Duque has a 4-page feature story.

While we are at post valentine mode, we came across amusing news items about Daang Matuwid rapper Pnoy Aquino candid talk that he once had a crush on Loren Legarda. In a similar vein, Philippine Star had a recent news item on Senate bet Risa Hontiveros being romantically linked with Ronald Llamas and our overstaying bachelor Pangulo. Love makes the world go round.

Even amid grinding poverty carpeting the islands, we get a nationwide poll that many (37 percent) of our countrymen wax optimistic their lives this year will be better.

Inspiring.

President Aquino’s distinct feat, “Daang Matuwid” love offering for Filipinos has indeed touched lives, which is the soul of effective governance.

Let’s play our part to sustain it.

At a recent RDC (Reg’l Devt Council) meeting, PCCI Co-Chair on Trade Nelson Yuchongtian stirred up the body with this query, “why is a business permit required YEARLY registration and not EVERY 3 YEARS as in our vehicles’ registration with the LTO or passport registration with the Department of Foreign Affairs every 5 years? This query is timely with the start of automation registration online.

Congratulations to Dra. Gregoria “Nene” Villaflor, newly elected national president of the Inner Wheel Club of the Philippines during its election at the Manila Hotel chaired by past national president Lily Yuchongtian.

Dra. Villaflor will succeed outgoing national President Margie Ortiz Luis this coming July 2013.

We had an interesting chat with Calasiao former Mayor Carmelito Sison Thursday evening.

Having gone through real politik and the grind himself, Lito would be an asset to any of the mayoral aspirant, Mark Macanlalay or Wilson de Vera. Whomever he’d swing his support to would have an edge in the political equation.

On vote buying, Lito has a wise advice: Yes, he says, vote buying is the talk of the town these days.

He elaborates: Voters today are wiser. They will use the politicians’ money for their (voters’) own selfish interest, not the politicians’ interest.

With sufficient enlightenment and education, the voters’ interest will jibe with the national or common interest.

It would be sheer lucky punch if the interest of the victory-centered politician jibes with the national interest.

Pray that it will.
