A Kabaleyan’s Thoughts…
Be Kind and Merciful
By S. Bill Jimenez
KINDNESS and mercy are gifts from God. They are the fruit of the Spirit.
As gifts, we notice that even little children are endowed with them. My grandson, Jordan, has exhibited them at early age. On a number of occasions as I picked him up from school, he would ask, “Grandpa, can we give my friend a ride home because no one can pick him up today?”
Probably unaware, little children often practice some good virtues and teach us good lessons. I told my grandson that what he was doing is demonstrating acts of kindness and mercy. As a former Boy Scout and scoutmaster, I told him about the scout slogan: “Do a good turn daily.”
Jesus was right about children: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3).
Jesus taught about love, mercy and kindness: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). The Lord suggested some practical ways to demonstrate kindness and mercy: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Matthew 25:35-36).
Our acts of kindness and mercy are always treasured by those who received them. As Aesop observed, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”
